City Paper Fiction and Poetry Contest Winners

Posted by csollod on Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Congratulations to Donna Sellinger, Nathan McNamara, Lola Pierson, D. Bennett, Lorraine Eakin, and Kevin M. Coll, winners of City Paper’s Fiction and Poetry contest. For poetry: “Pony Funerals” by D. Bennett is here; “On My Knees” by Lorraine Eakin is here; “Daughter-Rose” by Kevin M. Coll is here. Short fiction: “The Universal Sewer” by Donna Sellinger is here; “The Sound of Moving Water” by Nathan McNamara is here; and “Good For What Ails Ya” by Lola Pierson is here. Pierson ends her story with one of the best metaphors I’ve ever read: “Living in the town where you grew up is learning to breathe underwater.” How would you finish that sentence?

City Paper’s Top Ten Books of the Year and My Two Cents

City Paper’s Top Ten Books of the Year list is here. Nice variety, with more non-fiction than lists like these usually feature. I would have added Room by Emma Donoghue and maybe The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot. But nobody asked me.
