She’s magnetic

A list of “Rules for the Unruly” from Baltimore writer Marion Winik’s book of the same name is featured on a new Quotable magnet and card, which you can order here. It’s also available at the Johns Hopkins Barnes & Noble. There’s an excerpt from the book here (scroll down for the list). As a business-minded person, my first thought was to wonder if magnets pay more than books, but she assured me they don’t, though, since no advance is involved, she did start receiving royalties right away. She also wrote an article in the July/August Poets & Writers (print version only) about how many small paychecks can add up to a million dollars over a lifetime of writing.

In which I discover Marion Winik

Marion Winik with her dog, Beau, from her website

Dave Rosenthal shares his podium with local poet and author Marion Winik, who reviews several recent books by local authors over at Read Street. The best discovery of the column was author Winik herself, whom I hadn’t been acquainted with before. Her website is here; in her bio, she says about Baltimore: “What a fabulous, underrated town this is.” Among the best sentences about Baltimore ever.

She was on Oprah, too.
