FORSOOTH! Tis The THOR Trailer!

Posted by Marty Day on Thursday, July 29th, 2010

I have no idea how this surfaced, but someone somewhere someway some how obtained the full Thor trailer from San Diego Comic Con.

And this isn’t some poorly shot bootleg, oh no. This is a decent quality version of the five minutes of footage showcased this past weekend.

How does it look? Pretty great.

Asgard is amazingly realized, I have a good feel for the actors, and honestly, I’m a lot more confident about the film now.  My main worry, however, is this: what didn’t they show us?  I really feel like I’ve seen the whole movie now.  I sure hope there are some surprises in store, otherwise, Marvel Studios (and this leaker, provided it wasn’t intentional) sure has shot themselves in the foot.

Thor is set to hit theaters next May.

INCEPTION…in chart form.

Inception_Infographic_by_dehahs

Despite being possibly the most well received and enjoyed movie of the Summer, Inception is leaving many viewers confused.

Who’s dream are we in?  How many levels of dreams are occurring?  Where is limbo in the mix of things? These are but a few of the questions being asked by viewers.

Since it will be some time until we have the DVD/Blu-Ray release for multiple viewings and eventual ease of understanding, what are we to do to completely understand Christopher Nolan’s latest opus?

That’s where deviantART user dehahs comes in.  He’s put together an infographic explaining the different levels of dreaming in Inception in a way so stylish and so easy to read, the editors at USAToday must be green with envy.  I’ve embedded it above (you can click for a much larger version), so feel free to print it out for your friends the next time you’re having an Inception debate.

And be sure to check out dehahs’ page, too – he even put together an infographic explaining Pulp Fiction‘s tricky timeline!

THREADLESS MON–TUESDAY: Week of July 26th

Posted by Marty Day on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

I know, one week on the job, and I’m already missing deadlines. But never the less, I wanted to give you fine readers a look at some sweet tees as I bring you this week’s edition of Threadless Monday! Albeit on a Tuesday!

Late last week, as part of their San Diego Comic Con celebration, Threadless released a set of comic related tees.  Featuring art by comics pros Jill Thompson, Art Baltazar, Cliff Chiang and Tony Moore, the shirts tell a narrative tale and are available as an exclusive 4-pack, but personally, there was one design I liked above the rest.

everynight

“Every Night I Have the Same Dream, Issue 3, Vol. 1″ by Cliff Chiang was my favorite of the set, combining two of my loves, saucy looking super heroines and the undead.  It helps that Chiang’s art is so darned clean and stylish too, it makes for a really stunning looking tee.

xmenagerie

Continuing the super hero theme this week was Monday’s new shirt “The X-MENAGERIE” by Alice X. Zhang and Peter Kramar.  Mixing zoo animals with some all new, all different mutants from the Marvel Universe, this shirt is one of those great ones that if you get it, it’s amazing, and if not, still pretty rad.  It’s also available as a hoodie.

hollywoodswindle

Last, but far from least, is a t-shirt that shares my feelings about a current trend in Hollywood. “Hollywood Swindle” by Matt Wasser makes it clear, 99 times out of 100, 3D just isn’t worth it – and if they keep doing these poor upconversions, everyone is going to want their money back.  Share the sentiment with this tee.

As always, you can check out the shirts at Threadless.com by clicking their names or the photos of each shirt, and I’ll see you next week for another Threadless Monday!

Four Stylish GREEN LANTERN Teaser Posters

Posted by Marty Day on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Hoping to continue to build solid word of mouth coming off of San Diego Comic Con, Warner Brothers has moved forward with the hype for next summer’s Green Lantern movie by releasing these four new teaser posters.

Showcasing Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan/Green Lantern, Blake Lively as Carol Danvers and our first looks at the villains Mark Strong as Sinestro and Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond, these posters not only fit together and look pretty sweet, they also contain the words of the legendary Green Lantern oath.

I’ve included all four designs in a gallery below.

Green Lantern is set to hit theaters on June 17, 2011.

Hot Girls, Samurais & Mechs: It’s Zach Synder’s SUCKER PUNCH!

Posted by Marty Day on Tuesday, July 27th, 2010

Since his directorial debut with 2004′s remake of Dawn of the Dead, Zach Synder has made a name for himself with his stylish action films.  What he hasn’t done, however, was create a film that was all of his doing.  His first three films (Dawn of the Dead, 300 and Watchmen) were all based on previously existing works.

Next March, however, we get to see Synder’s first personal creation, a film called Sucker Punch.

What’s Sucker Punch?  Well, the official synopsis goes a little something like this:

Set in the 1950s, it tells the story of Baby Doll (Browning), who is trying to hide from the pain caused by her evil stepfather and lobotomy. She ends up in mental institution in Brattleboro, Vermont  and while there she starts to imagine alternative reality. She plans to escape from that imaginary world but to do that she needs to steal five objects before she is caught by a vile man. She has 5 days to escape before being lobotomized. In order to cope with the situation, she enters the hyper-real world of her imagination, and the lines between reality and dream begin to blur. She is joined with friends who are inmates from the institution. Lessons learned in the said fantasy world could help the girls escape their real-world fate.

But, based on the first trailer released last night (and embedded below), it’s probably best described as a post-modern Alice in Wonderland by way of Sky Captain & The World of Tomorrow.

Mixing 50′s cheesecake, modern martial arts films, a bit of an anime twist, mechs, dragons, samurais and god knows what else, it looks like a movie that is either all style over substance or one of the most unique action/fantasy films to hit theaters in recent memory.

Having just seen Scott Pilgrim vs. the World last night (more on that later) I know that the mix of surreal action and realistic characters can work, but this trailer just bombards you with stunning imagery leaving me wondering – will there be substance behind it?

We’ll find out next spring. Sucker Punch hits theaters on March 25, 2011.

SDCC: Marvel Studios Assembles THE AVENGERS

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, July 26th, 2010

As anticipated, Marvel Studios came out at SDCC 2010 with their guns a blazin’.

With Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger coming next summer, they had two very key films ready to showcase for an audience already frothing at the mouth with anticipation.  But what fans didn’t expect was how the panel would end.

Expectations were high, and by all indications, Marvel delivered.

Up first was the first footage of  Thor, showcasing both the Asgard and real-world sides of the film.  Chris Helmsworth apparently impressed as the thunder god, and Natalie Portman plays a good romantic interest.

Following the reveal of Thor was the first footage of Captain America: The First Avenger.  With only a week of filming behind them, the footage was mostly of a costume test featuring Chris Evans tossing the shield, but fans were able to also see an early scene starring a pre-Red Skull Hugo Weaving plotting the heist of the Cosmic Cube, a standard Captain America plot device. Weaving pleased fans by chewing up scenery as only he can, but what made the footage particularly interesting was the new reference that the Cosmic Cube belonged to Odin, tying the Thor and Captain America films together.

Then, when it seemed things were wrapping up, Marvel gave fans a HUGE surprise.

Samuel L. Jackson took the stage to reveal his (well, more his character Nick Fury’s) team – The Avengers.

In an unexpected turn of events, the full cast for the Avengers, along with director Joss Whedon were paraded out, in a rock-star esq moment.  Two new announcements were confirmed in this unannounced gathering, Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) would be carrying the bow of Hawkeye, and ending weeks of fan speculation, Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac) would be taking over for Ed Norton as Bruce Banner/The Hulk.

avengersassembled

The photo above was something fans never expected to see, at least this year, but here is your confirmed Avengers lineup:

Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury
Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark
Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson
Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow
Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Chris Evans as Captain America
Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye
Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner / Incredible Hulk
Joss Whedon, Director

Suffice to say, Marvel really made San Diego Comic Con their moment, and made The Avengers, Thor and Captain America the talk of the con.

Captain America and Thor are due Summer 2011, with The Avengers arriving Summer 2012.

SDCC: WALKING DEAD TV Trailer

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, July 26th, 2010

The-Walking-Dead

One of the most anticipated and talked about projects at San Diego Comic Con this weekend had to be the TV adaptation of The Walking Dead.

Due to air on AMC starting this October, it’s a perfect storm of a hugely successful comic series; a well known, visionary director behind the scenes (Frank Darabont of The Green Mile, The Mist and The Shawshank Redemption) and a network who between Mad Men and Breaking Bad, has yet to do no wrong.

By all fan indications from this weekend, the trailer shown was absolutely perfect in tone and feel, and thanks to the magic of a handi-cam and the internet, we have a bootleg of the footage.

Let’s hope AMC is kind enough to give us a higher quality version very soon.

SDCC: Brad Pitt to Star In WORLD WAR Z!

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, July 26th, 2010

Everyone loves zombies, right?

Well, that wasn’t always true.  If anything, I’d say that zombies had a huge resurgence around the beginning of the 2000s or so.  And the tipping point of this new love affair of the undead was probably the two books from Max Brooks (son of Mel!), the humorous Zombie Survival Guide, and it’s counterpart, the more realistic fictional memoir of a zombie apocalypse, World War Z.

The latter has been in various forms of theatrical development since being optioned by Plan-B Entertainment and Paramount Pictures back in 2007, but it looks like it’s finally moving forward.

Max Brooks was telling folks at San Diego Comic Con this weekend that the script has been greenlit, with Marc Forster (Stranger Than Fiction, Quantum of Solace) set to direct, but with a huge star leading the film – Brad Pitt!

Aiming for a Summer 2012 release, putting Pitt out front makes World War Z a huge film for what could be an already packed summer (Batman 3, The Spider-Man Reboot, and The Avengers have already scoped out 2012), and puts a great spotlight on what should be a solid adaptation of an amazing book.

Furthermore, Brooks told reporters that Paramount also optioned The Zombie Survival Guide and his The Zombie Survival Guide: Recorded Attacks graphic novel.  Can you say trilogy?

SDCC: New TRON:LEGACY Trailer!

Posted by Marty Day on Thursday, July 22nd, 2010

The first major reveal of Comic Con International goes to Tron: Legacy.

The sequel to the 1982 cult-classic Tron puts us in the shoes of Kevin Flynn’s son, who enters the cyberspace world of Tron to discover what happened to his father, who disappeared.

This, the second major trailer for the film, is the first to give us a taste of the story line, and showcases the immaculate CG work done to create a young Jeff Bridges.  Shown at the SDCC panel, then immediately released to Yahoo.com, it’s a great showcase of how far technology has come since the original film.

And honestly, how can you not lose your mind over that last scene?

One really positive note from the panel: there will NOT be 3D upconversion for Tron: Legacy. 2D elements will remain in 2D, but CG elements will be converted, for the best of both worlds.

Tron: Legacy hits theaters on December 17, 2010.

AVATAR Continues With THE LEGEND OF KORRA

Posted by Marty Day on Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

korra

Sure, M. Night’s rendition of the Nickelodeon animated series Avatar, titled The Last Airbender seems to have failed on literally every measure imaginable, but that doesn’t mean the creators of the original can’t continue the series, does it?

The Big N doesn’t seem to think so, as Nickelodeon has just greenlit a sequel series to Avatar, to be titled The Legend of Korra.

Here’s how the initial press release describes it:

The Legend of Korra takes place 70 years after the events of Avatar: The Last Airbender and follows the adventures of the Avatar after Aang – a passionate, rebellious, and fearless teenaged girl from the Southern Water Tribe named Korra.  With three of the four elements under her belt (Earth, Water, and Fire), Korra seeks to master the final element, Air.  Her quest leads her to the epicenter of the modern “Avatar” world, Republic City – a metropolis that is fueled by steampunk technology.  It is a virtual melting pot where benders and non-benders from all nations live and thrive.  However, Korra discovers that Republic City is plagued by crime as well as a growing anti-bending revolution that threatens to rip it apart.   Under the tutelage of Aang’s son, Tenzin, Korra begins her airbending training while dealing with the dangers at large.

Sounds like we’ll have just enough of the original world to appease viewers of the first series, plus enough changes to grab new viewers.

Personally, I’m quite behind on Avatar (thanks Netflix for letting me get caught up), but I’m pretty intrigued to see how this series will go.

What say you, Airbender fans?
