EW Grabs First Real Image of CAPTAIN AMERICA

Posted by Marty Day on Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Up until now, every image across the web of Chris Evans as Captain America has been a painting, CG render, spy pic, action figure or otherwise unofficial sort.

That changes with this week’s edition of Entertainment Weekly.

Evans as Captain America gets the cover, alongside an indepth look at the production of Captain America: The First Avenger.

Along with some interesting antidotes about the casting process (Evans turned down the role 3 times, and is signed for six films), the plot is outlined, giving us a tale set in 1942, with Captain America and his sidekick Bucky battling the evil Red Skull (played by Hugo Weaving) as he attempts to obtain “The Tesseract”, otherwise known to comic fans as The Cosmic Cube.

The issue hits stands on Friday, and while Evans really does look the part on the cover (he’s almost unrecognizable), I can’t help but feel his face looks familiar…

Here Come TWO More AVATARS!

Posted by Marty Day on Wednesday, October 27th, 2010

With last December’s release of Avatar, James Cameron did what was considered to be the impossible.

He released a $500 million 3D movie with mostly CG characters, and beat his own record for the highest grossing box office of all time ($2.7 Billion Worldwide).

Well, just announced this morning, he’ll be doing it two more times.

Avatar 2 & 3 will go into immediate production, with Avatar 2 due to hit theaters in December 2014 and Avatar 3 hitting on December 2015.

Details are scarce at this time, aside from continuing the story of the planet Pandora seen in the first film, but with such huge popularity, this announcement must be very well received by both fans and Fox shareholders alike.

The press release follows below:

LOS ANGELES (October 27, 2010) __ Moving forward with the most anticipated films of the next decade, Fox Filmed Entertainment Chairmen Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman announced today that Academy Award®-winning filmmaker James Cameron has agreed to make AVATAR 2 and 3 as his next films.

Cameron, who had always viewed AVATAR as the creation of a new world and mythology, will begin work on the scripts early next year with an eye towards commencing production later in 2011. Cameron will decide if he will shoot the films back-to-back after he completes the scripts, but the release of the first, as yet untitled sequel, is targeted for December 2014, with the third film contemplated for a December 2015 release.

AVATAR 2 & 3 will be produced by Cameron and Jon Landau for Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment.

“AVATAR is not only the highest grossing movie of all time, it is a created universe based on the singular imagination and daring of James Cameron, who also raised the consciousness of people worldwide to some of the greatest issues facing our planet,” said Rothman and Gianopulos. “We had no higher priority, and can feel no greater joy, than enabling Jim to continue and expand his vision of the world of AVATAR. This is a great day in the history of our company, and we thank Jim, Jon Landau, Rae Sanchini and all of their team and all of our Fox colleagues throughout the world, who have made this possible.”

Commented Cameron: “It is a rare and remarkable opportunity when a filmmaker gets to build a fantasy world, and watch it grow, with the resources and partnership of a global media company. AVATAR was conceived as an epic work of fantasy – a world that audiences could visit, across all media platforms, and this moment marks the launch of the next phase of that world. With two new films on the drawing boards, my company and I are embarking on an epic journey with our partners at Twentieth Century Fox. Our goal is to meet and exceed the global audience’s expectations for the richness of AVATAR’s visual world and the power of the storytelling. In the second and third films, which will be self contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc, we will not back off the throttle of AVATAR’s visual and emotional horsepower, and will continue to explore its themes and characters, which touched the hearts of audiences in all cultures around the world. I’m looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.”

“It is very exciting to be teaming again with our partners at Fox to give audiences the opportunity to return to Pandora,” said producer Jon Landau. “With the first movie, Jim only scratched the surface of the stories he wants to tell and the creatures and world he wants to create. Now we will continue his vision.”

AVATAR is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in nearly $2.8 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. AVATAR won Golden Globe® awards for Best Motion Picture and Best Director; and was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and won Oscars for art direction, visual effects and cinematography.

AVATAR was written by Cameron from an idea he nurtured for over a decade, while working on the technology necessary to realize its wholly imagined world. Working with Joe Letteri and his team at Peter Jackson’s WETA Digital, Cameron created a fully immersive 3D cinematic experience of a new kind, where revolutionary technology that was invented to make the film disappeared into the emotion of the characters and the epic nature of the story.

AVATAR 2 & 3 will mark Cameron’s latest collaborations with Twentieth Century Fox, a relationship that spans 25 years and marks one of the most successful filmmaker-studio alliances in motion picture history. Cameron and Fox first joined forces in 1985 for Aliens, which became a sci-fi classic. Next came The Abyss, which revolutionized visual effects technology; and True Lies, a blockbuster starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. In 1996, Fox greenlighted Cameron’s Titanic, which became the most successful film in history, and won a record-breaking eleven Academy Awards, including Best Picture.

Lightstorm partner Rae Sanchini negotiated the deal on Lightstorm’s behalf.

What Fun Is The ACME Warehouse WITHOUT Wile E. Coyote?

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, October 25th, 2010

Never before have I been more excited for a project, then immediately less excited.

Just announced today, Warner Bros has bought a pitch to create a film about the infamous ACME Warehouse, the company who afforded skilled hunter Wile E. Coyote all of his amazing gadgets as he attempted to catch the Road Runner.

Writers Kevin and Dan Hageman put together the pitch, a live-action CG hybrid featuring the devices of the amazing ACME brand, but there’s one key element missing…

There will be no Looney Tunes characters in the film.

What the heck are they thinking?!  I know the idea is to do a Warner Bros based psuedo Night at the Museum, but why even bother to do the project without the characters that defined it?

It’s like doing an entire film about the Batmobile without so much as a reference to the Dark Knight!

I’ve ranted over on my other blog about the terrible decisions WB is making in terms of “revitalizing” the Looney Tunes brand, but this is just terrible.

Either make something new, or deliver a great work with classic characters. Don’t throw out crap just because you can. It just makes my inner child sad.

3 More STAR WARS? Give Me A Break.

Posted by Marty Day on Sunday, October 24th, 2010

Stop me if you’ve heard a rumor like this before.

Now that George Lucas has [done something], we’ll finally be seeing three more Star Wars films, set after the original trilogy!

The rumors have been around since Return of the Jedi hit theaters back in 1983, with the idea being then that he’d do the Prequels then do Episodes 7-9.

Well, now that all six Star Wars films are set to be re-released in 3D, the rumor is that these re-releases are an attempt by Lucasfilm to raise the necessary capital to produce three new films, a’la the 1997 Special Editions, which paid for the Prequels.

Look, I know we all want to believe that more films could happen (and more desperately, they could be as good as the original three), but I call BS.

The timeline in the rumor puts the first film around 2015 or 2016, which would make George Lucas a ripe 72 years old.

Call me crazy, but I don’t think he’ll be up for three more movies at that point, and on that, I call this a creation of overzealous fans.

Thought CAPRICA Was Enough? Here Comes More BATTLESTAR!

Posted by Marty Day on Sunday, October 24th, 2010

The power of Battlestar Galactica for the SyFy Network continues to be proven, as with Caprica barely through it’s first season, a second series has been greenlit with a 2-hour pilot, Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome.

Another prequel to the 2005 reboot of the 1970′s Sci-Fi series, Blood & Chrome will depict the younger years of William Adama during the 10th year of the first Cylon War.

Personally, I haven’t enjoyed Caprica nearly as much as I have Galactica proper, but if this will be closer to the series that birthed it, I will be very glad.  I can’t help feeling like this is going to the same well one too many times. We shall see.

The official press release follows:

Battlestar Galactica: Blood & Chrome takes place in the 10th year of the first Cylon war. As the battle between humans and their creation, a sentient robotic race, rages across the 12 colonial worlds, a brash rookie viper pilot enters the fray. Ensign William Adama, barely in his 20’s and a recent Academy graduate, finds himself assigned to the newest battlestar in the Colonial fleet… the Galactica. The talented but hot-headed risk-taker soon finds himself leading a dangerous top secret mission that, if successful, will turn the tide of the decade long war in favor of the desperate fleet. “The ‘Galactica’ universe as re-imagined by Ron Moore and David Eick is rich with possibilities and backstory,” said SyFy’s Mark Stern. “We jumped at the chance to revisit the William Adama character and explore this exciting chapter in the BSG narrative which falls between the events of the original series and the prequel, ‘Caprica,’ currently airing on Syfy.”

“While maintaining the themes of politics, social propaganda, and the timeless question:  what does it mean to be human? – ‘Blood & Chrome’ will also return us to the authentic, relentless depiction of combat and the agony and ecstasy of human-Cylon war, which was the hallmark of ‘Battlestar Galactica’s’ early seasons,” said Eick. Michael Taylor wrote the teleplay from a story by Eick, Taylor and Bradley Thompson & David Weddle.

Huzzah! THE HOBBIT Is Moving Forward!

Posted by Marty Day on Sunday, October 24th, 2010

After a very lengthy and ugly journey through pre-production that has seen the original director (Guillermo Del Toro) leave, unions threaten to boycott, and even the right’s owners (MGM) going bankrupt, the Lord of the Rings prequel, The Hobbit is finally marching forward.

With Peter Jackson taking charge of the project as director (he was originally scheduled to just produce and write the film), the two films are set for a December 2012 and 2013 release, and we have our first casting announcements. It doesn’t get much more official than that.

Leading off the cast as Bilbo Baggins is Martin Freeman, best known on these shores as the lead of Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy or as Tim from the UK version of The Office. He’s an absolutely fantastic actor, who I think will make a great lead for this film.

Also set as members of the cast are Richard Armitage as Thorin Oakenshield,  Aidan Turner and Rob Kazinsky as Kili and Fili, nephews of Thorin, Graham McTavish as Dwalin, John Callen as Oin, Stephen Hunter as Bombur, Mark Hadlow as Dori, and Peter Hambleton (The Strip) as Gloin.

We should expect to hear the announcements shortly of the return of Ian McKellan as Gandalf and Andy Serkis as Gollum, plus the rumored casting of actors including David Tennant, Stephen Fry and Bill Nighy (voicing Smaug the Dragon).

Sounds like a great first step for a project that has had the hardest time getting there, but I have zero doubt that Jackson and Weta Digital will recreate the magic of the original Lord of the Rings films.

2 New Pieces of GREEN LANTERN Concept Art!

Posted by Marty Day on Sunday, October 24th, 2010

So far, almost every piece of official Green Lantern media, right down to the footage previewed at San Diego Comic Con, had been Earth based.

Sure, we want to see Hal Jordan become GL, but more importantly, I think the fans want to see him do his thing in space!

Well, worry not, as Warner Brothers released two new pieces of concept art, which show us that if not anywhere else, we’ll see the planet Oa.

Oa serves as the homebase for the entire Green Lantern Corps, and if this art is any indication, we won’t just see the headquarters, but also some of the more unique locales found on Oa.

This first piece shows the Crypts of Oa, a spooky realm designed to serve as the final resting place of Green Lanterns.  I could see a very awesome final battle sequence taking place here.

The second piece of concept art is of Oa proper, complete with the Green Lantern’s Central Battery in the center.  This is pretty much unlike any environment featured in any major sci-fi film over the past few decades, so I can’t wait to see it come to life.

But that wait will be long, as Green Lantern (starring Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan) won’t be hitting theaters until June 2011.

How Much Are IRON MAN & THE AVENGERS Worth?

Posted by Marty Day on Tuesday, October 19th, 2010

How about $115 Million?

Just announced yesterday via Walt Disney Pictures, Disney has given Paramount $115 Million to bring the Marvel movie franchise in-house starting with 2012′s The Avengers and continuing into 2013′s now officially announced Iron Man 3.

When Marvel was bought by Disney, many people including myself figured that Disney would start buying the character rights back from the various film companies who purchased them, such as Sony (Spider-Man), Fox (X-Men, Fantastic Four) and Paramount (Iron Man, Captain America, etc.), but this is the first such move.

Next summer’s Captain America and Thor will remain with Paramount, but moving forward, expect all major Marvel studio releases under the Disney label.

The press release is below.

BURBANK, Calif. – October 18, 2010 – The Walt Disney Studios, Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios announced they have reached an agreement under which Paramount will transfer its worldwide marketing and distribution rights to Disney for Marvel Studios’ The Avengers and Iron Man 3. Paramount will remain the worldwide distributor of the upcoming films, Thor and Captain America, as well as the previously released Iron Man and Iron Man 2.

Under terms of the new deal, Disney will pay Paramount $115 million for the transfer of the distribution rights to Iron Man 3 and The Avengers to be paid on the theatrical release dates. These monies will serve as a minimum guarantee against the distribution fees.

“In completing this agreement, Disney will now assume worldwide marketing and distribution of The Avengers and Iron Man 3 and leverage these two highly-anticipated films across the multiple global platforms of The Walt Disney Company,” said Rich Ross, Chairman of The Walt Disney Studios. “We appreciate the tremendous momentum that Paramount established with these iconic Marvel characters and look forward to propelling the brand even further in the coming years.”

“Five years ago, when Paramount and Marvel made our initial deal, both our businesses were in very different places,” said Brad Grey, Chairman & CEO of Paramount Pictures. “We are grateful for the partnership we have had with the terrific Marvel team over these years and proud of the work we have done together. Today, this new agreement is the right deal for Paramount, for Marvel and for Disney. We look forward to working together on Thor and Captain America, and we wish Disney and Marvel the utmost success, in what we know will be a very productive and wide-ranging partnership.”

“Paramount has been a wonderful partner in helping Marvel Studios bring our characters to the big screen,” said Alan Fine, Office of the President, Marvel Worldwide, Inc. “This agreement makes sense now that Marvel is part of The Walt Disney Company.”

Paramount will release Marvel Entertainment’s Thor and Captain America worldwide beginning on May 6 and July 22 of 2011, respectively. The Avengers will be licensed to Epix under Paramount’s existing pay television arrangement.

Corporate Synergy At It’s Best: MARVEL Meets TRON

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, October 18th, 2010

Ever since Disney bought Marvel, fanboys around the globe (myself included) have been worried about how the House of Mouse may meddle with the affairs of the Company Spider-Man Built.

Well, I think we can safely say that if the promotional stunt being done next month is any indication, there are some really cool ideas ahead.

Set to promote the December release of Disney’s Tron Legacy, 10 Marvel comics will be getting special variant covers.

What makes them special? The covers, drawn by Brandon Peterson & Mark Brooks, depict Marvel heroes as if they were in the Tron universe.

The results, as you can see, are really cool.

I’ve included a full gallery below, and the covers will be available on Amazing Spider-Man #651, Avengers #7, Avengers Academy #7, Captain America #612, Incredible Hulks #618, Invincible Iron Man #33, New Avengers #7, Secret Avengers #7, Thor #617 and Wolverine #4.

I think I may need to make a computer background out of a few of them.

TOM HARDY To Join BATMAN 3?

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, October 18th, 2010

The name Tom Hardy probably doesn’t ring a bell. But if you’re one of the many people who saw Inception this past summer, you already know who he is, and that subject title just got you excited.

Fresh off of the official agreement for Christopher Nolan to helm the 3rd Batman film, due to hit theaters in Summer 2012, comes the first casting announcement of Tom Hardy. Obviously, Nolan became a fan of Hardy while working with him during the production of Inception, and while his role has yet to be announced, I have little to believe that he won’t add a certain level of class and skill to an already excellent ensemble cast.

It’s certainly reasonable to assume that Hardy will be taking the role of a villain in the cast, given the high profile nature of his casting, but much like Rhys Ifans joining Spider-Man, Warner Bros is keeping the role secret.

I’m sure we’ll find out soon, and once I know – you will too.
