Looks Like We Know THOR’s Surprise Cameo!

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, January 3rd, 2011

One of the great things that Marvel Studios has done to build a unified theatrical Marvel Universe is allow each movie to somewhat meld together.

They give the audience little teases and hints in each movie to indicate that the individual film is part of a much larger web of stories to be told.

Iron Man had the surprise cameo of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury, leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., looking to build the Avengers.  The Incredible Hulk had Robert Downey Jr. appear as Tony Stark, continuing to build the Avengers.  And in Iron Man 2, Thor’s hammer made a (heh-heh) thunderous appearance at the end.

The next movie to feature a surprise cameo? This May’s Thor.

Now, this is of course a rumor, so take it with a grain of salt. And of course, take it with a nice big Spoiler Alert.

If the tipster to popular movie news site The Wrap is to be believed, Thor gives us our first glimpse at Jeremy Renner as the Avenger’s archery expert, Hawkeye.

I’ve been excited for the idea of Renner as Hawkeye for months, and if this means we get to see him in costume a year early, color me excited.

Thor hits theaters on May 6th, 2011, with The Avengers following on May 4th, 2012.

PIRATES 4 Trailer Leaves Me Strangely Optimistic

Posted by Marty Day on Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

YouTube Preview Image

Well, last time I covered the first stills from Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and now we have the first official trailer for the film (which you can see on the big screen with Tron Legacy this weekend).

I’ve given it a few watches, and honestly, it looks kind of fun.  Sure, the increased salary for Johnny Depp seems to have resulted in the movie using less CG and more practical effects (see the zombies and mermaids), but it looks like a nice, fun, action filled flick. My concern is that the overall plot may be too much, and unless we’re seeing flashbacks of Jack Sparrow’s love affair with the pirate played by Penelope Cruz, is that another bland young romantic couple?

But, overall, I dare say I am optimistic that it’ll make for a fun time at the cinema.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hits theaters in May 2011.

Did You Miss Jack Sparrow? PIRATES 4 Shots Revealed!

Posted by Marty Day on Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Whether or not you were a fan of Pirates of the Caribbean and it’s eventual expansion into a three film trilogy, there’s no doubting the popularity of the franchise.

Taking the big risks of putting then-unproven-as-a-blockbuster-lead Johnny Depp as the main hero and making a movie out of an amusement park ride, the creators of Pirates series laughed all the way to the bank, racking billions of dollars for Disney.

This summer, after a not so well received third installment, Jack Sparrow returns to the screen for the fourth time with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Due to hit theaters on May 20th, 2011, the film is apparently the first in a second trilogy, believe it or not, so the stakes are high for this one!

To get the hype going before the trailer reveal next week (due to be attached to Tron Legacy and online as early as Monday), Walt Disney Pictures has released six high-rez stills from the film, featuring Sparrow up to no good as always, plus his new sidekick played by Penelope Cruz.

The plot is set as follows:

In this action-packed tale of truth, betrayal, youth and demise, Captain Jack Sparrow crosses paths with a woman from his past (Penelope Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love–or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth. When she forces him aboard the Queen Anne’s Revenge, the ship of the formidable pirate Blackbeard (Ian McShane), Jack finds himself on an unexpected adventure in which he doesn’t know who to fear more: Blackbeard or the woman from his past.

How do I feel about the movie? Well, like most, I really enjoyed the first Pirates film, liked most of the second, and enjoyed parts of the third. But I’m really unsure of a fourth film, let alone a fifth or sixth. Disney must really believe in the evergreen nature of this franchise.

What If: SEUSS DID STAR WARS?

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, December 6th, 2010

Hey there, BMore Nerdy readers.  Allow me to apologize for the breakdown in posts recently.  I was working through some stuff in my free time, and as this is my second blog (the other being Blast-O-Rama), I ended up losing track of the fun here.

Never the less, I’m back in the swing of things with a post I’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Cartoonist Adam Watson put together some really great illustrations last month, mixing two icons of my childhood, Dr. Seuss and Star Wars.

I think we can all agree that Watson did a great job of replicating Seuss’ style, and I absolutely love some of these reinterpretations, especially the Seuss-Styled Darth Vader.

I’ve included a full gallery below. Enjoy!

Another Name Joins SPIDER-MAN, And He’s An A-Hole!

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, November 22nd, 2010

The uh, shall we say…unique casting for 2012′s 3D reboot of the Spider-Man film franchise continues on, with the latest edition.

In a film headed by Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man, Emma Watson as Gwen Stacy, Rhys Ifans as the main villain, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben and Sally Field as Aunt May, the movie gets a little more interesting with the announcement of Denis Leary as Gwen Stacy’s Father, Captain George Stacy.

This would be Leary’s first major film role since 2002′s The Secret Lives of Dentists, and while he’s definitely had some critical buzz about him since launching Rescue Me in 2004, he’s not my first thought for a major superhero film cast member.

While not a single member of the cast has come from the field of “obvious” picks, it’s becoming clear that director Marc Webb has a definite vision of Spider-Man, and while none of these actors are major marquee names (yet?), they are all more than skilled actors, even underrated in some cases.

No matter how you look at it, the flick is becoming more and more intriguing, and I cannot wait to see who gets announced next, as thus far, I’ve been unable to predict any of them!

HULK Returns To TV, Guillermo In Tow

Posted by Marty Day on Monday, November 22nd, 2010

When Disney made it clear that they would be taking advantage of the wide breadth of characters available to them with their purchase of Marvel, they weren’t kidding.

And the latest developments from ABC surely have proven it.

Announced last week, ABC is moving forward with a brand new television series for the classic comic book character The Incredible Hulk.

Last seen on TV in the 1980s, with the classic Bill Bixby live action program, this relaunch of the Hulk on television has two major creative titans backing it – filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro (Hellboy, Pan’s Labyrinth) and producer David Eick (Battlestar Galactica).

No stranger to monsters, Del Toro adds this new series featuring the green titan to a heavy slate taken on since his departure from directing The Hobbit, but if he’s needing a partner to make the show shine, there’s no better choice than Eick, who between Galactica, The Bionic Woman and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys has quite a history at reinventing characters for a new generation.

While the details on the show are understandably low, there is still at this time no information as to how, if at all, the TV series will connect to the theatrical interpretation of the Hulk, which currently rests on the shoulders of actor Marc Ruffalo, making his debut as Bruce Banner in 2012′s The Avengers.

Any way you look at it, this is an exciting time to be a comics fan, and I cannot wait to see how this all pans out.

Here Comes Another Superhero Death!

Posted by Marty Day on Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

You’d think that after the deaths of Superman, Batman, Captain America and countless others, the world of comics would realize that we’re all a bit over the whole “death” thing.

You would, of course, be thinking wrong.

As the above cover for Marvel Previews (Marvel’s catalog for comics coming out, published two months in advance), it looks like another comics legend will be dying in February – Spider-Man.

Now, it remains to be seen if this is a literal death or more of a figurative one (the latest variation on the “Spider-Man No More!” tales done every few years), but I can’t help but ask – can we just get a moratorium on deaths?

I know, an ironic request, but really, it’s an overplayed story device, used for shock – and my Spidey deserves better.

Are You Ready For COWBOY NINJA VIKING?

Posted by Marty Day on Tuesday, November 9th, 2010

Aside from sounding like a five year old’s list of dream jobs, Cowboy Ninja Viking will soon be the next big comic to make the transition from page to screen thanks to Disney.

Based on the Image Comics graphic novel written by AJ Lieberman with art by Riley Rossmo, the comic depicts an assassin with a split personality, equal parts cowboy, ninja and viking.  It sounds like a concept for an out there b-movie, but the comic itself takes the ridiculous premise and title and elevates it towards something quite readable.

So who have Disney assigned to adapting this tale? Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese.

The names may not ring a bell, but as the writers of last fall’s Zombieland, I think they’ve proven well enough that they’re able to take an absurd premise and raise it to a level of quality unforseen from it’s simple beginnings.

Wernick and Reese are becoming quite the in demand duo, having also penned the latest version of the Deadpool script, and currently working on Zombieland 2. Here’s hoping this is the next in a series of great projects!

Does SPIDER-MAN Have Its Uncle Ben & Aunt May?

Posted by Marty Day on Thursday, November 4th, 2010

With the weeks, days, hours and minutes ticking down until director Marc Webb starts shooting his relaunch of the Spider-Man film franchise in December, the final actor i’s and t’s are being dotted and crossed respectively, with some interesting choices being lined up to fill crucial roles in the Spidey mythos.

Freshly signed to the project is veteran actor Martin Sheen, attached to the role of Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben.  Ben, who’s death sets forth the chain of events which leads to Parker using his powers and becoming Spider-Man, is a crucial role for the film, and I can’t help but think they may have hit the nail right on the head.  As a West Wing fan, I’m very excited to see Sheen take the role.

No sooner than Sheen was announced, did the first major rumor come about as to who would be his wife.

Sort of an odd choice, in my perspective, is the rumored casting of Sally Field as Peter’s only remaining relative, the motherly Aunt May.  While I know that Field is getting up in age, she doesn’t quite feel like the right person for the role, and I’m not entirely convinced she and Sheen fit right.  However, I’m not the man calling the shots, and this version of Aunt May might be more “youthful” than the typical granny-esq portrayals.

No matter how you think, the project is moving full steam ahead, and you certainly cannot say they’re playing it safe.  With a diverse and talented cast, this version of Spider-Man will certainly be one to watch when it hits theaters in May 2012.

BATMAN Goes Corporate!

Posted by Marty Day on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010

While I’m not the biggest fan of a company showing their hand to the press before a comic hits shelves, there’s little doubt that in the world of comics, this is a big deal.

Wrapping up the story he started with Batman R.I.P., which killed Bruce Wayne, and officially ushering in Wayne’s return, writer Grant Morrison threw the fans a curveball in the final pages of today’s Batman and Robin #16.

Spoilers follow, so be mindful!

As comic fans know, the next series to be released by Morrison is this fall’s Batman Inc..

Featuring a newly returned Bruce Wayne as Batman, it features him traveling the globe to build a network of crimefighters, while ward Dick Grayson (the original Robin/Nightwing) continues to handle the mantle of Batman in Gotham.

It seems the idea of “Batman Inc.” has been pushed a bit further, as in the final pages of today’s release, Wayne not only reveals publicly that he has been funding Batman’s war on crime for all these many years, but that he will take this funding international, starting a new company called Batman Inc. (as seen in the pages above).

It’s worthwhile to note that he did not say that HE was Batman, but never the less, this is a HUGE change for the status quo of the Bat books, and as a long time fan, an interesting refresh for the decades old character.

The first issue of Batman Inc. hits shelves on November 17th, so be sure to make a reservation at your local comic shop now!
