Good Week to be a B’More Sports Fan

Posted on Tuesday, March 9th, 2010 at 2:22 pm

For the majority of us Charm City sports fans, our list of fanatical priorities looks something like this:

1. Ravens
2. Orioles
3. Terps Basketball

Those teams, in some order, are consistently the top three listed when the sports lover in Baltimore is polled.

There is good news and excitement on all three of those fronts this week.

On Monday, the Ravens held a press conference to officially introduce newly acquired wide receiver Anquan Boldin (read more about that here).

Around lunch time on Tuesday, it was announced that Greivis Vasquez was named the Atlantic Coast Conference’s Player of the Year. Vasquez beat Duke’s John Scheyer, who was second in the voting, by a margin of 39-12.

You Terps fans who were ready to riot all over again should Scheyer win (or even share the award with Greivis): you can put down the couch now.

Just a few minutes later, word came down that Gary Williams had won ACC Coach of the Year. Gary beat down the competition even more convincingly than did his senior guard, besting Coach K 42-8.

Once again, the Terps handed the Dookies a beatin’.

On the orange and black front, the O’s will have their first Sports Illustrated cover in 13 years this week. Second year catcher Matt Wieters graces the March 15, 2010 issue with his “tower of power, next Joe Mauer” presence.

Some of you may worry about the “SI Cover Jinx,” but hey…NOT having any players on the cover for the last 13 years sure hasn’t helped any, so let’s go the other route for a bit.

Next week, Brian Matusz!*

Soak it up, fellow Marylanders. The weather seems to finally be turning to spring, the last bits of that awful snow are melting, and our teams are all representing themselves quite well at the moment.

Derek has been a fan of Baltimore and Maryland sports teams his entire life. In one of the earliest photos ever taken of him, he can be seen using the television for balance as he does his best Eddie Murray batting-stance impression. He has been blogging about the Ravens and Orioles for more than two years at his personal Web site, BMore Birds Nest (www.bmorebirdsnest.com). This site was the subject of a feature piece on the front page of the Baltimore Sun's You section on January 6, 2009. Derek also blogs at WNST.net, and his work has appeared around the sports blogosphere at sites such as Bleacher Report and Yardbarker.

Derek does not for one second think that, because he writes on the Internet, his opinions on the Ravens, O's, Terps, UMBC Retrievers, Towson Tigers, Loyola Greyhounds, or any other team are more valid than yours. He invites you to please feel free to argue with him in the comments, or to offer to take him out for a beer and discuss the many levels on which he is oh-so-wrong. Or right, if you're the agreeable sort. The operative word here, really, is beer.
