With the world’s greatest sports car race, the 24 Hours of Le Mans, behind us, ALMS teams are afforded the opportunity to catch their breath; the fourth round in the ALMS isn’t until July 9th.  For the third year now the series will compete on the 3 mile road course at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah.  The race is the standard 2 hour 45 minute go with incredible views of the Rockies in the back drop.

There was some doubt earlier in the season if the numbers in the field would hold true as the middle and end of the season drew near.  While the 35 car field (13 GT) scheduled to race at Miller may not be as strong as field’s past, it’s still pretty good with potential to make for a great race!

Le Belle Macchine d’Italia was held this past weekend in the Pocono mountains.  I must say, this was one of the most worthy collections of Italian exotics I’ve seen.  F-430′s seemed to be run-of-the-mill.   Most impressive was the Enzo FXX, I’d love to see a team enter this car into the ALMS GT class or previous GT-1 class.  Labeled as the largest 3-day Italian motoring event in North America, it just might have been.  I’d like to see that collection here in the Baltimore Grand Prix!

I was able to snap a few shots, take a look..

…not bad, but how bout this…

Has anyone heard of Le Belle Macchine d’Italia?  Supposedly it’s the largest 3-day Italian motoring event in North America and it’s happening right up in the Poconos, a morning’s drive from Baltimore.  I checked with a few sources and found that it is in fact, a spectacular gathering of some of the most prestigious Italian cars in the country.  Concours will be held at the Skytop Lodge and racing/driving events at Pocono Raceway.  We’re heading up Friday afternoon and looking forward to a great showing!

So it should be a fun time, anyone else there?  If we’re spared some free time we’ll try to catch some of the F1 GP also this Sunday in Valencia.

Audi, Audi, Audi…1,2,3 Finish at Le Mans!

2010 24 hours of Le Mans logo

The green flag fell this past Saturday for the 78th running of the world’s greatest sports car race; the 24 Hours of Le Mans!  The record level, 56 entries in the field took off with all the glory and excitement you would expect from a race that’s endured 78 years.  Not surprisingly however, only half the field was running the next morning when the checkered flag was waiving.  Endurance races of this caliber, 24 hours with an average speed of 120+mph,  require extensive preparation of both man and machine.  Those inadequately prepped, won’t stand a chance.

Diesel power seems to have taken over at the forefront of the LMP1 class.  After a commanding presence in qualifying, Peugeot was the favorite and pole position holder.  Only problem with qualifying is that it doesn’t simulate the endurance aspect of a 24 hour race.  Team Peugeot was performing well but ultimately retired from the race due to various technical reasons.  The diesel powered Audis took 1st, 2nd and 3rd in class and overall with the first place, number 9 Audi R15 completing 397 laps!  Congratulations to Audi on a hard fought victory, for representing three of the six LMP1 cars able to complete the race of the 18 LMP1 entries, and for setting new speed and distance records…excellent job!

There were twelve LMP2 cars, eight LMGT1 cars including the first place in class finisher Saleen S7R and Lamborghini Murcielago, and 18 LMGT2 cars!  Well done Porsches on capturing yet another class victory and congratulations to you PCA guys.  However!… if BMW was also represented by 6 teams as opposed to only 2…well, then..who knows?  Too bad for the Risi Competizione Ferraris; after being knocked to the back of the grid for technical issues in qualifying, their appearance wasn’t much improved as they retired from the race with mechanical failures.  No matter though, F430s still took 2nd and 4th and their place has already been solidified in history.

The next race on the 2010 ALMS schedule will be July 9-11 at Miller Motorsports Park in Utah with 35 entries as of 6/11.  That’s a pretty strong field, not too bad, but after watching this past weekends race, I feel like I need to do some lobbying to strengthen the LMP1 class; I want to see some diesel powered Audis and Peugeots over here!  I going to have to work on that.

The Baltimore Grand Prix is officially an IndyCar Sanctioned Event!

Baltimore Grand Prix Press Conference kick off photo

This past Wednesday, June 2nd, we had a fantastic turn out at the Baltimore City Convention Center for the BRD/Indy press conference.  Several weeks ago we announced the contractual agreement between the city and BRD.  This conference was to announce the agreement or sanctioning, between BRD and the Indy Racing League.  So Baltimore will officially host a Grand Prix for five consecutive years including an IndyCar race and the support races known as the “Road to Indy”, beginning August 2011.

Mayor Stephanie C. Rawlings-Blake and Governor Martin O’Malley were both in attendance offering tremendous support and advocacy.  They’re both in agreement that this grand event can and will be highly beneficial for the city in more ways than one.  Economic impact is anticipated to be around $60 million, possibly well more.  Local hotel, restaurant and entertainment businesses are sending all the right signals; they know come race weekend there won’t be a room vacant.  Taking a look at perhaps the bigger picture, consider the publicity and advertising a nationally broadcast race will offer Baltimore.  From spectacular aerial views to seem-less, freshly paved city streets (that’s right, new streets!) this will be an undeniable opportunity to showcase the city and bring a hint of international diversity (racing will be broadcast live on either ABC or the Vs network).

President of the IRL’s commercial division, Terry Angstadt and driver, Graham Rahal were both on location as well.  Graham is one of the leagues younger and up-coming drivers.  He seemed like a great guy with a lot of excitement and energy.  One of the difficulties from a driver’s perspective he mentioned, will be the learning curve demanded by a new track.  At the same time, it will be pretty cool being the first to drive a track that will be a part of the schedule for at least the next five years and potentially much longer.  He went on perhaps most significantly; being the first time all drivers will experience the new course, there will be no familiarity advantage, equalizing the field.

So don’t wait to purchase your tickets, suites, hotel rooms or whatever because they won’t last long!

This weekend should be a blast hosting both the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Canadian F1 Grand Prix.  As of yesterday, the largest field since 1955 is set to take the grid at Le Mans with 56 cars!!!  I read Porsche will even have a hybrid in there!  I’m thinking Fisichella and Risi Comp will again, be tough to beat.  I like the BMW though especially considering its success at the Nurburgring last month.  This should be absolutely incredible, I’m going to France.

Dario Franchitti Wins the 94th Running of the Indy 500!

Posted by Jason on Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

 Indy 500 logo

Needless to say the big story from this past weekend was the spectacular 94th running of the Indy 500 at the Brickyard!  What a thrill it was.  From start to finish, the action never stopped.  With two crashes in just the first 8 laps, you tried hard not to blink for fear of missing the story.

Tony Kanaan, after a rough time in qualifying, was able to put on quite a show.  TK fought through the ranks from 33rd up to the front, ultimately finishing 11th…not too bad.  Alex Lloyd also put on the moves advancing from 26th all the way up to 4th!  Dan Wheldon and Marco Andretti took 2nd and 3rd up from starting positions 18th and 16th; some tight racing there as well.

Perhaps not the best pit work we’ve seen though.  Cars were crashing into pit walls, taking off with only three wheels, throttling up with the fuel filler still attached; it was a riot!  The teams that got it right though, really got it right.

With around four or five laps remaining, it seemed like every car in the field, race leaders included,  needed to stop for fuel; or could anyone make it?  As tension was on the rise, the biggest thrill, and subsequently the biggest disappointment, had the crowd on it’s feet.  The most spectacular crash of the race was saved for last and in the final lap!  Mike Conway and Ryan Hunter-Reay were in a dangerously close battle for 3rd.  Conway tried to over-take Hunter-Reay pushing the envelope just a little too far.  Their tires touched and Conway went airborne taking both cars out!  It was pretty horific.  Drivers see their windows of opportunity grow smaller and smaller as the finish draws near and perhaps sometimes push a little too hard.  Conway was transported to a hospital to treat a broken leg and spine injury.  You’d have to agree he’s pretty lucky, if you saw the crash.  He’ll be out of the series for about three months but is expected to make a full recovery.

So under caution and in not-so-glorious fashion, Dario Franchitti takes the checkered flag.  It was his 2nd Indy 500 victory and he’s going to have savor it quickly because just next weekend they’ll be at Texas Motor Speedway.

In other racing action, Lewis Hamilton finally got a win in Formula 1 at Turkey.  They’ll be in Montreal in a couple weeks for the Canadian Grand Prix, back on the schedule for 2010; same weekend as the 24 Hours of Le Mans.  The ALMS doesn’t return to the track until July 9th when they’ll be in Utah.
