Remember when I wrote about South African photographer Zwelethu Mthethwa’s new exhibit at the Studio Museum in Harlem last Friday? Well, in related news, the online photo magazine Flak Photo and the nonprofit photography foundation Aperture are teaming up to give away copies of Mthethwa’s eponymous monograph to three lucky readers via Facebook. The rules are fairly straight forward:

Step 1: Go to Flak Photo and pick your favorite photo from their archive of featured photographers.

Step 2: Copy and paste the link of the photo to the comments section of Flak Photo’s Facebook page by August 1 (that’s THIS Sunday).

Step 3: Wait with bated breath to see if you’re one of the randomly chosen winners.

Now go forth and browse. Good luck!

Nerd alert: A New and Improved Google Images

Caravaggio paintings on Google Image Search

First Flickr revamped their digs with a new and shiny layout and Google has recently done the same with its Image Search. The new site is much less clunky and definitely more user-friendly and intuitive. The images are bigger, with more on the page than the previous layout, easier to browse, and there’s more information about the image (website that houses it, direct link, etc.) available by mousing over the images, rather than clicking on the photo to get to a new page.  This new page also looks like it was made for people scrolling on their smartphones and iPads. I’ve seen a few grumblings about the new layout from people who care about this sort of thing (i.e., nerds like me) but I dig it.

Garance Doré is one of those Jack Jill-of-all-Trades types that I want to be like when I grow up. She is a photographer, illustrator, videographer, jet-setter and woman about town whose warm, infectious charm shines through her sun-dappled photos of women flaunting their chic, yet effortless style. Be sure to check out Doré’s eponymous blog, where she chronicles her life as she travels from city to city, continent to continent, documenting street fashion as well as shooting traditional runway shows and editorial shoots for magazines such as Vogue.

Flickr page of yours truly

First of all, happy Friday! We’ve all made it to end of another week.

Second of all, posting is finally going to get back to normal around here now that I finally got the Internet set up in my new apartment. No more running around looking for a free table and outlet at Panera, woo hoo!

Third of all, the actual point of this post: Flickr recently revamped its website and I love it. Cleaner design, more white space, bigger photos, land a better looking Favorites page (more thumbnails per page!)

That’s all from me. Have a lovely weekend, and stay cool, lovelies.

Friday link round-up

Posted by Danielle on Friday, June 4th, 2010

Happy Friday! I decided to share a round-up of great links from various parts of the photosphere. Of course, if you have a link you’d like to contribute, feel free to leave a comment.

+Today’s Pictures at Slate remembers the Tiananmen Square protests.

+Lens is featuring “In the Heart and Soul of Cuba,” a fantastic photo essay that documents the people of Havana.

+Sunday is the last day to catch One Hour Photo Show at American University.

+Great feature on Dorothea Lange from NPR’s Morning Edition.

+Self Publish, Be Happy is a weekend-long event that will be celebrating independently published photography books. Lucky Londoners.

+I’m so glad I stumbled upon the portfolio of Lia Sáile. It’s full of ethereal, dream-like images.
