K&G Weekend Update

Carlos Garcia

If you have to have your name in the Blast's record books, wouldn't you want it to be for something awesome like penalty minutes? (Photo Courtesy of the Baltimore Blast)

Alright, I admit it. It seems I was wrong. The first game of this season seems to have been an anomaly, as the Blast has gone 4-0 since then, outscoring opponents, 44-19 this past weekend in upstate New York.

The Blast routed the Rochester Lancers, 26-9, Saturday afternoon, and followed up yesterday with an 18-10 victory over the Syracuse Silver Knights, the authors of the season-opening drubbing.

Forward Matt Watson and babyface J.T. Noone led Baltimore’s offensive efforts with two goals each, and Machel Millwood contributed a three-point power play goal as well. Mike Lookingland, Max Ferdinand and Pat Healey all also scored.

It sounds like it was a chippy game, with both teams sending frequent visitors to the penalty box, including Carlos Garcia, who found his way there twice, giving him the dubious honor of making the top five of the Blast’s all-time penalty list.

P.S. Sorry this was late. I started writing this then got lured away by shopping and martinis. On a Monday night! (Not that I’m gloating.)

Blast Pound the Lancers, 26-9

Posted by Staci on Saturday, November 26th, 2011

This is better than a dateline.

I’m blogging to you from my vacation in Florida. I’m fighting hard for a K&G Employee of the Month nod. I think I have a good shot, don’t you?

The Blast played today in the first of two games this weekend. It doesn’t seem that Thanksgiving dinner slowed these guys down (the way it slowed me down to an overstuffed, drunken crawl), since they beat the Rochester Lancers today, 26-9.

Adauto Neto led the way with a hat trick, followed by Machel Millwood and new addition Shaun David, who had two goals each. Rookies J.T. Noone and Mike Deasel each scored as well, and so did Carlos Garcia, Max Ferdinand, Matt Watson and Pat Healey.

The Blast next take on the Syracuse Silver Knights tomorrow at 4 p.m. for a chance at redemption after the season opening loss.

***

A couple things happened over the holiday (err, well…while I was on holiday). Wednesday, the Blast signed veteran Shaun David, a forward who began his career in 2003 and has played for the Dallas Sidekicks, St. Louis Steamers, New Jersey Ironmen, Monterrey La RaZa and the Omaha Vipers.

The signing comes after forward Lucio Gonzaga was placed on the MISL’s inactive injured list after undergoing ACL surgery on his right knee.

***

And Tuesday, Sagu was named MISL Goalkeeper of the Week after allowing only 14 points during the course of two games last weekend. I feel like things like this happen so often that I really have nothing more to say about this.

Shmobbies & Movember

Busy working for YOU!

So this week is everyone’s-in-town-and-I-have-to-see-everyone week and I am not sure I will have another opportunity to write before Thursday and wish you all a very happy Thanksgiving.

In the spirit of November and all its wonderfulness, I have a few non-soccer-related items to share.

Firstly, thanks for all your votes in the 2011 Baltimore Sun Mobbies. I came in ninth in the best sports blog category, which I think is pretty damn good for my first nomination. Especially since I beat Roch Kubatko by six spots, which was really my secret goal. Next year, we’ll be No. 1 though, amirite?!

Next, we all know October is breast cancer awareness month. But did you know that November is lung cancer awareness and prostate cancer awareness month? We’ll get to the prostates in a minute, but first lets talk about lung cancer. It sucks, and it has recently affected some people very near and dear to me. I also realize the economy sucks, so you know, do what you can. Just do it before you go broke throwing elbows at Wal-Mart at 5 a.m. Friday morning.

I recently participated in a D.C. walk to benefit the LUNGevity Foundation, and it was pretty awesome. I’d like to say we did the whole 5K, but less than halfway through our team decided to go to lunch. Why? Because that’s how we do.

If you have a few bucks to spare, click here to donate. You can click on any team member’s name and donate any amount — every little bit helps — but I’d recommend clicking the name “Carly Hamburger.” That’s my homegirl.

Now, onto the prostates. Let me tell you a little story. As I’m sure you’ve guessed, I have a journalistic pedigree rivaled only by the likes of Hunter S. Thompson, William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer. How did I earn this background, you ask? Obviously by putzing around at NYU for four years and doing as many internships as possible.

One such internship took place at Maxim, where I, an optimistic 19-year-old, learned the industry inside and out by transcribing interviews with dumb hotties and opening mail from prison inmates addressed to the aforementioned dumb hotties. One exceptional day, a fellow intern and I were tasked with finding eggnog for a feature to be included in the holiday issue. However, it was only September at the time and nary a bottle of eggnog was to be found in New York City.

So we set about making eggnog from scratch. Three gallons of it. So that three of our talented editors could see if they could each pound a gallon in an hour. Thus, trashcan ‘nog was born (since it was the only vessel large enough to hold three gallons). One dropped out and the other two decided to make it a who-could-do-the-most-nog-shots-in-15-minutes contest. To see how delicious my eggnog was, enjoy this holiday gift from me to you.

What does this long convoluted story have to do with prostates? Well, the winner of the eggnog contest is Steve Mazzucchi, who now donates his face to male reproductive systems every November for Movember, during which he grows an awesome moustache to raise money for the good cause. This is his fifth Movember of awesome facial hair, and if he hits his goal of $2,000, he will have raised close to $10,000 in all his Movembers combined. That’s almost as badass as drinking lots of eggnog, so if you want to help a brother out (and see his ‘stache), donate here.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone. Go Ravens, and go Blast!

J.T. Someone

J.T. Noone

J.T. Noone's first career goal got the Blast's weekend off to a stellar start.(Photo Courtesy of the Baltimore Blast)

I’m not gonna lie.

Years of being an Orioles fan has conditioned me to expect the worst. And after last week’s home opener, optimist that I am, I was ready to write off the Baltimore Blast’s 2011-2012 season altogether. Frankly, I was still at that point Friday night when I came home from dinner, checked the score and saw a tied game going into overtime against the Missouri Comets.

And then, just like that, almost nine minutes into overtime, this rookie guy, J.T. Noone, scores the goal to even out the Blast’s record to 1-1 with a 10-8 victory heading into a Saturday night matchup against the Wichita Wings, helping the Blast redeem themselves and gain momentum for the next soccer-packed few weeks.

Ptah Myers was the first to score for the Blast, followed by Mike Lookingland and Max Ferdinand. Matt Watson scored in the second quarter, but Missouri evened the score in the fourth before the Blast eked out the win in overtime.

Saturday night’s game against the Wichita Wings wasn’t as tight. Myers got the Blast started again with a two-point goal, followed by one from Carlos Garcia. The Wings’ Jamar Beasley tied it up with two goals of his own in the second quarter, but Adauto Neto and Pat Healey each contributed three-pointers.

In the third quarter, Ferdinand followed with his third goal of the season in as many games, and although the Wings scored again, it wasn’t enough to overtake the Blast, who came away with a 12-6 victory.

The Blast continue on the road this week, heading to Rochester Saturday and Syracuse Sunday.

Brrr.

I’ll be sunning myself in Florida. There should be some teams in warmer places.

The Man, The Myth, The Legend

Ed Hale

Stay thirsty, my friends. (Baltimore Sun photo by Jed Kirschbaum / March 12, 2009)

He does not sleep. He waits.

He has counted to infinity — twice.

His words carry weight that would break a less interesting man’s jaw.

If he were to pat you on the back, you would list it on your resume.

He bowls … overhand.

When in Rome, they do as he does.

Sharks have a week dedicated to him.

Police often question him, just because they find him interesting.

OK, enough of that. Blast owner Ed Hale is not Chuck Norris, nor is he The Most Interesting Man in the World, but Joe Flacco does bank with him (even if Ray Rice raises the green flag), and he does carry a certain…um…swagger.

But most importantly, he has (almost) singlehandedly kept indoor soccer alive and well in Baltimore, and perhaps one day he’ll even conjure us up a new arena. For these accomplishments and more, the United Soccer Leagues have announced that Hale will be one of three in the first class of inductees into the newly established MISL portion of the USL Hall of Fame.

Honored as a “builder,” or a visionary in the soccer world, he will (somewhat ironically) be inducted alongside longtime Milwaukee Wave head coach Keith Tozer and former player Tatu.

Now maybe he can win us a trophy for his game face alone.

P.S. How does Joe Flacco have a Baltimore accent without having grown up here?

Unfortunate…Like Tonight

Posted by Staci on Saturday, November 12th, 2011

Despite a valiant fourth quarter attempt, the Blast had too wide of a margin to overcome, losing to the Silver Knights, 18-7. (Photo Courtesy of the Baltimore Blast)

I, like many of you fine people, was eager for tonight’s Baltimore Blast 2011-2012 home opener against the Syracuse Silver Knights. How would the Blast respond, coming off a lackluster championship defeat at the hands of the hated Milwaukee Wave? How would the fresh new (and barely pubescent) faces of the 2011 roster gel? How would the stalwart Blast stand up to a league full of new teams?

I don’t know about you, but an 18-7 loss to an expansion team was not the answer I was expecting, and I’m a little bit uneasy to see how the season unfolds.

“We have seven new faces on the team, but I’m not using that as an excuse,” said head coach Danny Kelly. “These guys are professionals. They’re expected to do their job and tonight we didn’t do our job. It’s very tough to swallow here in front of our home fans, and we had a great crowd. Just very disappointed with the result.”

In front of 8,078 home fans, the Blast got off to an uncharacteristically slow start in the first half, unable to score once, despite out-shooting the Silver Knights, 16-6. A hangover from last season perhaps? Maybe Syracuse was simply riding the wave of momentum following last night’s 23-7 win over the Norfolk SharX?

Regardless of the reason, forward Alex Megson scored first for the Silver Knights off an assist from forward Cory Elenio just over two minutes into the game. Midfielder Andre Berenzon followed up with a two-pointer six minutes later, and the second quarter was a snooze, with the Blast failing to cash in on a power play opportunity.

Berenzon widened the margin scoring an unassisted three-point goal 4:37 into the third quarter. Shortly after, Pat Healey earned two minutes in the box for kicking (sorry if this is ignorant, but isn’t kicking kind of essential to soccer?). Unlike Syracuse, Baltimore was unable to kill the power play, and Megson scored off a Berenzon assist at the 7-minute mark.

And the Silver Knights continued to pile on the goals, with Slavisa Ubiparipovic (say that three times fast) taking an assist from Andriy Budnyy and finding the back of the net on a hard shot right up the middle before the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter didn’t look much better, with defender Jeff Hughes taking yet another pass from Berenzon for a goal, just over one minute into the quarter. Max Ferdinand quickly followed up with an unassisted three-point goal, to an eruption of cheers from the best fans in the MISL.

Defender Mike Lookingland found the back of the net next, just over four minutes into the fourth quarter, on an assist from Healey. Almost 10 minutes in, the game began to get interesting, with midfielder Carlos Garcia scoring off a pass from fellow veteran Adauto Neto, bringing the score to 13-7. Shortly after, Kelly brought Lookingland in as a sixth attacker.

Unfortunately, with an undefended net, Syracuse’s Danny Hall sent one from past the midfield line that rolled into the net for three points with just over a minute left in the game. And it continued to get worse as Megson outran Garcia to find the back of the net again. Syracuse improves to 3-0, and the Blast begins the season at 0-1.

“We were too casual with the ball,” Kelly said. “That’s unacceptable.”

***

Now in his eighth season with the Blast, veteran goalkeeper Sagu has been named the team captain, replacing the retired Robbie Aristodemo. Sagu is a three-time goalkeeper of the year, six-time All-League selection and most importantly, homeboy named himself after a dessert. If that’s not awesome, I don’t know what is.

The new captain’s diagnosis of what ailed the Blast tonight?

“In my opinion, we need to step inside the field ready,” Sagu said. “Because the last game we played against Milwaukee here, it was the same situation. The game tonight, same situation. When you step inside the field, you have to be ready. If you’re not ready, the team coming in will be ready for you.”

***

In awesome sweatband news, Ferdinand must have decided that too many other players were sporting neon shoes (which go so well with red socks), and he needed to set himself apart further. Tonight he sported an awesome sweatband, the likes of which are only rivaled by those of Doug Neely and Josh Rife.

It’s a little black number with a white spot on it. From up here in the sky press box, I can’t tell what logo it is, but it looks like one of these guys or one of these. (That last guy is kind of unfortunate, huh? Kind of like tonight.)

Scottish 101

If I was a dude, I'd totally want to spell my name like Nicki Minaj too. (Photo Courtesy of the Baltimore Blast)

The Blast announced today that they have finalized their roster for the 2011-2012 season, announcing the addition of midfielder Nicki Paterson, the 2011 Charleston Battery (USL) MVP who hails from Scotland and played college soccer at UNLV.

I had the chance to talk with Nicki, who really does spell his name that way, so you know, (sic.), last month in training camp. I’d like to tell you what he said, but I don’t speak Scottish. Jusssst kidding — I’ll translate what I can. FYI, in Scottish, “Donny” means Danny, as in Kelly, and in Blastimorean, “Naka” means assistant coach David Bascome.

“I know a few players that have played here in the past, and it’s a great organization [scottishscottishscottish],” Paterson said. “I spoke to Donny, and he was really excited that I could be coming down, and he thinks I can be an asset to the team, and hopefully I can be.

“I know quite a lot of the guys here on trial. I know a few of the guys, Max Ferdinand plays for Rochester. A lot of the guys that play outdoor play here. Donny seems real cool. Naka, the assistant coach, is good fun as well. The team likes to have fun but when we play, it’s serious, and that’s what I like.

“I can’t wait to score my first goal in front of all the fans at home. The guys tell me it’s a really good atmosphere, and I love the European fans, they’re all crazy and singing with us. Down in Charleston, it’s a family atmosphere, but here they’re all banging the glass and I’m really excited to play in front of 10,000 fans, get my first goal and celebrate.”

Well, Paterson may be slightly confused about some things. (“Danny Kelly,” “cool,” same sentence?) But he is right about the great — albeit interesting — atmosphere at Blast games, and I know you all won’t disappoint him at Saturday’s home opener.

***

The team also announced today that they have released forward Adrian Bumbut, who has been with the team for the last three years. Odd, since they so recently signed him to a contract and announced his return. But whatever, I’ll refrain from editorializing here.

You can, however, read about him here…if you speak Romanian. Sorry — I may not be totally up on my Scottish, but my Romanian is even worse, and I can’t translate that for you. But, if you speak Romanian, enjoy!

In Staci-related news, the voting for the 2011 Mobbies is over. Thanks to all who voted, and to all who didn’t? Well, karma’s a bitch, right? I’ll keep you posted on where K&G comes in in the rankings (*cough*::first::*cough*).

And now I wanted to leave you with the video to my new favorite song with Big Sean and Nicki Minaj (now make that — hammertime!), but I can’t find a censored version and I just can’t post that thing to this blog. It’s really vulgar. Which is too bad, since there’s a lot of Nicki in booty shorts with the Union Jack on it, which is like pretty appropriate, right? (I hope I’m not being ignorant here…I think Scotland is part of the U.K.)

So here’s second best of Nicki Paterson’s namesake.

Vote Or…Else?

Ya heard?

Well?

Have you been voting?

For me, I mean. Just for Kicks & Giggles. Every day.

Hey, the MISL season kicked off last week in parts unknown Wichita, Syracuse and Missouri. The Wichita Wings and the Missouri Comets played a home-and-home, with the Comets taking both matches, 16-14 and 14-14, respectively. The Syracuse Silver Knights, who the Blast face at Saturday’s home opener, edged out the Rochester Lancers, 16-15.

The Silver Knights, who feature former Blast defender Ryan Pierce, will take on the Blast after a Friday night game against the Norfolk SharX. (Why the “X” has to be capitalized, I don’t know, don’t ask me. I’m just someone who appreciates real grammar and spelling. *Shrug*)

Any pre-game predictions?

You might recognize him from such classics as Reason No. 817 Why I Need Crazy Pills, Notebook from the Land of Pleasant Living, and most recently, the Preseason Magic 8-Ball.

As you can see, he’s a stunningly handsome man. Breathtaking, really. And if someone of that caliber asks you to do something, you’d do it right?

Beau the Soccer Cat, K&G’s official mascot, wants you to vote for Just for Kicks & Giggles in the Baltimore Sun’s Mobbies. You can vote here every day. Maybe even more than once a day if you happen to have more than one e-mail address that you don’t mind sharing with the Sun.

And while you’re at it, you may as well click on this blog a few extra times for good measure. I told you once that every click is a donation to the Beau the Soccer Cat Likes Friskies Grillers Fund, but after taking him to the fancy vet, the fund name had to change. Young Blood

Posted by Staci on Tuesday, November 1st, 2011

Has J.T. Noone even hit puberty yet? (Photo Courtesy of the Baltimore Blast)

So when I started covering the Baltimore Blast, I was 22 years old, and I was younger than pretty much all the players. Now they’re signing guys who are 22, and that kind of weirds me out. I mean, the next thing we know, they’re going to be signing players that were born in the 90s! Children!

The Blast announced today that they have supplemented their roster further, adding three players, one old and two young new. Forward Adriano Dos Santos adds depth to the roster after having played two games with the Blast during the 2009-2010 season. The Blast also added two more players, 23-year-old J.T. Noone and 22-year-old Mike Deasel (no really, those are their real names).

Noone, who played the last two seasons for the USL Harrisburg Islanders is a midfielder out of Temple University. Defender Deasel, a local product played for Loyola Blakefield and later for Loyola College. Like fellow recent signee Akira Fitzgerald, Deasel came up through the Baltimore Bays. Deasel is making his professional debut this season.

Like Deasel, I am making my debut (how’s that for a segue) in this year’s Mobbies! Look under the Best Sports Blog category and track our progress. Vote daily! Have you placed your vote yet today? (No, not for School of Roch, for me.)
