City Councilman Bernard “Jack” Young currently gets paid over $57,000 a year to be city councilman for the 12th district. He also works for the Maryland Department of Human resources. You can read specific information about his state job here.
I think it is ridiculous that anyone gets to hold two public sector jobs and double dip from tax payer funds. Young will be paid over $100,000 a year to be city council president. I hope that Councilman Young will dedicate himself full-time to the citizens of Baltimore and give up his state job. $100,000+, great benefits, and a generous pension is more than enough to live on in a city where the median income for a household is $30,078, and the median income for a family is $35,438.
WBAL’s Jayne Miller also became interested in Young’s state job and if he plans to give it up. Listen to this interview that she conducted with Young. She also brings up how Mr. Young owned a house in Harford County for many years. Young calls it a “Summer Home”. Rikki Spector has a residence in the 10th district and the 5th district (which she represents), so until she is forced to live in her district they can’t go after Young. This does not excuse Young, but the precedent was already set by Spector.
Young sounds bad in this interview. Now his fellow council-people have a legitimate excuse to change their votes (while of course at the same time receiving extra political donations here and there). I wonder who could have encouraged Ms. Miller to pursue this interview? Is the O’Malley machine hard at work?
In 2009 Jack Young’s campaign raised $64,659.86 according to the 2010 campaign finance report that just came out. The campaign’s total bank account balance is now $239,164.90. Young has much more money than his potential competition. Bill Cole’s campaign raised $21,285.00 in 2009. The campaign’s total bank account balance is now $33,912.29. The chart below shows where some of Jack Young’s contributions came from in 2009. One (in bold print) really stuck out.

The Eldorado Lounge is a strip club in East Baltimore. I was shocked that a well funded candidate for City Council President would take money from a strip club. Who wants their name associated with a strip club? Then I did some more research and I learned that Councilman Young is just doing what many other local politicians are doing:

Quite a city we live in. Nice to see that the Mayor got in on the action.
Adam is the most recognizable face of the recent resurgence in Reservoir Hill. He has appeared on many national and local radio shows, in several news publications, and at numerous events discussing his innovative urban redevelopment ideas and his unique lifestyle. Adam is a successful entrepreneur, community activist, and a local political guru who ran for city council in 2007. He is the founder and director of the TechBalt.com Buy a Block Project and BaltimoreHourly.com. His fearless local political commentary has rocked the local blog scene for most of this decade and he plans to take it to the next level in the next decade here on Charm City Current.
Catching up on my reading… I realize this comment comes late. While most are focused on Jack, et.al taking campaign $ from a strip club, my interest and concern lies more with the dual salary of Jack and other elected politicians that earn incomes from government entities or private companies as political favors. In my district, Senator Lisa Gladden earns a salary as a state senator and an other salary as a state public defender. This, certainly, is a conflict of interest. I find her to be a mediocre senator, and her reputation as a public defender is the same. Yet, she’s paid full salary and benefits for both. Del. Nat Oaks holds a job that appears to be a political favor & conflict of interest as well. He works for the state Injured Workers’ Insurance Fund. I know. Del.Sandys is a law professor at the University of Maryland, a state university. The only one of my four repesentatives that APPEARS not to benefit from two state salaries is my favorite, Del. Jill Carter. She’s a lawyer with a small, relatively unknown firm, Craig & Henderson.
The above information is listed on each of their bio’s.So, that’s all I have to go on.
Adam, I would like to know how many of Baltimore’s elected officials receive dual goverment incomes, and, or other employment as a political favor. Could you please post this information in the near future?
I remember when Keifer Mitchell complained he was fired from Harbor Bank because he was challenging Sheila Dixon for mayor. I felt he should have been thankful he’d been hired by the bank. That was clearly political favoritism hiring because he was on the city council. Please, Adam, tell us where and how the rest of the folks earn incomes. Thanks.
You can own 2 homes, but one of them is a Primary Home. Your timeshare is not a primary home. In Young’s case his primary home was Harford County, not Baltimore City. Your primary residence receives a tax credit (homestead), whereas your second home doesn’t. He claimed the city as a primary and if a tax investigation occurs, it may reveal a discrepancy-claiming credit on both homes. It’s time to put a stop to ALL the unethical crap going on. Officials are to be held to a higher standard than the public-the public should act ethically as well. Rawlings-Blake faced foreclosure and other liens in office-and now she’ll be Mayor and at the same time instituting policies regarding foreclosures, etc. Even Norris had a bankruptcy before becoming commissioner-then mishandlesd police acct-then “lied” on mortgage application. Dixon w/gift cards-clean house locally and nationally. Let’s not forget Larry Young either-he still thinks he was railroaded also-they all blame others except themselves. Dan Rodricks column today-next generation-smart-educated-again-look how blake handled her personal affairs.
Jayne Miller and all the other “journalists” are just trying to get the most sensational stories they can because they think that will get the station good ratings, which may be true. They are not interested in news or information.
Now that we’ve got Sandy’s attention, maybe he can tell us why his colleague and running mate Nat Oaks needs all that stripper money and why some of that money was spent on official 41st district campaign literature with Carter/Oaks/Rosenberg photos thereon?
Slur on Ms. Miller’s journalistic integrity? Stop Delegate Rosenberg! This “story”, which is really a non-story, was placed and solicited to the local media outlets by the O’Malley administration. There is no way that with several days left before the City Council elects its new Council President, which by all indications Councilman Young has the votes to win, this “story” is all of a sudden news?
Bernard “Jack” Young has been on the City Council for over 10 years, do you think none of his peers on the council, other elected officials in the city and state and/or people in the media did not know that Young owns a property in Harford County as well as his district residence? If we started checking the residence requirements of all elected city officials I am sure there is a lot of ambiguity there. This same issue happened several years ago with State Sen. Blount. He was using an city address, were he received correspondence and spent a limited amount of time, but lived over the city line in Woodland/Randallstown. The law allows you to own multiple properties. A lot of people own timeshares, which is techinically recognized as a second home because you have a deed. Also this requirement has been skirted around by elected city officials for centuries, but now we want to apply it to Jack Young?
Is this all the O’Malley administration has to get Bill Cole into office? I can’t wait until the next election to vote O’Malley out of the Governor’s Office!!!
You wrote about Jayne Miller’s interview with Councilman Yoiung: “I wonder who could have encouraged Ms. Miller to pursue this interview? Is the O’Malley machine hard at work?”
I know that you view many events as the product of a vast left-wing O’Malley conspiracy, but the above is a slur on Jayne Miller’s Journalistic integrity and ignores her history of reporting on the O’Malley administration.
