Some thoughts about what this election will lead to

Posted by ameister on Friday, September 16th, 2011

Here are some links to stories about the 7th District election:

“Some political observers say the lawsuit likely cost her the election.

“Belinda’s Conaway’s mistake was not so much that she may have had a place of residence out of her district, but she chose to make such an issue of it by filing a lawsuit,” said Matthew Crenson, a professor emeritus of political science at the Johns Hopkins University.

“If she had just let it go by,” Crenson said, “she may very well have been re-elected. She was the victim of her own political miscalculation.”

Some interesting election facts:

  • Nick Mosby received over half of the votes in the 7th district race (2770/5273= 52.5%).
  • Nick Mosby received more votes than Frank Conaway did in his bid for mayor! (2770 to 2007)
  • Mary Pat Clarke supported Belinda Conaway.

I believe that with the infusion of youth onto the Baltimore City Council (Mosby is 32 and new 2nd district councilman Brandon Scott is 27) that the Internet will play a bigger role in local politics, constituent services, and elections than it previously did. This change bodes well for local political blogs like this one.

There still are plenty of controversial people left on the City Council.  Pete Welch and Warren Branch are the first names that come to mind. Both men got less than 39% of their district’s vote and both men have been accused of living off of their relatives’ last names.  Will one of these men pull a Belinda Conaway and put a nail in the coffin of his city council career? Stay tuned.

Now that Belinda Conaway’s frivolous lawsuit against me has come back to end her City Council career there is a committee chair opening. Will Jack Young do the right thing and make Bill Cole the new Chair of the Budget and Appropriations Committee?

Mosby wins! Belinda Conaway’s attempt to destroy me leads to her own political destruction

Posted by ameister on Wednesday, September 14th, 2011

Nick Mosby accomplished something that was once considered politically impossible in Baltimore when he defeated an incumbent with the last name of Conaway. This City Paper article shows that since single member districts were established for the 2003 primary election that only one City Council incumbent has lost an election. That “incumbent” was Vernon Crider. Crider was never elected to his office, he was appointed by the city council to fill a vacancy when his predecessor left.  Nick Mosby was just involved in the biggest City Council upset of the last thirty years! How did we get here?

In March of this year I wrote an article about a home Belinda Conaway and her husband own in Randallstown. This was the first time that this easy to find house was talked about in any publication. The house was listed under Conaway’s married last name (Washington), but Conaway had recently reported owning the house on ethics filings which can be viewed by anyone on the top floor of City Hall in the library.  Anyone could have found out that Conaway owned a house in Randallstown. The crossing guard on my block would eventually tell me that she even knew about the house. The Washingtons were not trying to hide the fact they owned a house in Randallstown.  A reporter should have researched this house a long time ago.

Since I was the first person to report the existence of this house, I was also the first person to report the existence of the homestead property tax credit that Belinda Conaway received for this house. The information was easy to find online. My original blog entry provided a PDF copy of a Belinda Conaway signed real estate document that showed she said the house was her principal residence. In order for a house to be your principal residence you have to live there.  Belinda Conaway said and continues to say she lives at 3210 Liberty Heights in Baltimore. Something was clearly wrong here.

My story caused a little stir. A few other media outlets covered the story in March and early April. Despite the important tax/political/residency issues my story raised, it was soon forgotten. The Baltimore Sun did not bother to mention it in its print edition. For some reason (that only Belinda Conaway truly knows) Belinda Conaway decided to sue me for libel on May 10, 2011, almost two months after the story was first viewed on my little blog. She thought $21million was an appropriate amount of money to sue for. Belinda Conaway did not know it then, but she had just put the nail in her city council coffin.

A two term city council incumbent never faces a serious challenge because they have already become so ingrained into the public consciousness in the district that it is virtually impossible to defeat them. Belinda’s lawsuit against me quickly destroyed huge chunks of her unquestioned authority in he 7th District. She went from being viewed as a “nice lady” to being seen as a bully trying to hide something. Numerous media outlets covered the filing of the lawsuit (Belinda’s lawyer sent out a press release to announce the suit!). The coverage was unflattering to say the least. Few logical people could understand her reasoning.  She was basically inviting a legitimate contender to run against her in September. Nick Mosby answered the challenge. He said the lawsuit played a large role in his decision to run.

On August 1, 2011 Belinda Conaway eventually had to drop her frivolous lawsuit against me. The humiliating end of the saga further hurt her image. At this point I was free to start writing about her again without the fear of her trying to bring up my blog posts in the now dropped case. I did not hold back. I am proud to say that I have been helping Nick Mosby’s campaign since August 1, 2011. It has been an awesome adventure. I am very proud of what this campaign stood for and what it brought about.

I have always written with what some would call a “bias”. I definitely give an opinion. If I think something is wrong and that it helps bring down Baltimore then I am going to say how wrong it is. If you do not like my writing style then read something else. Freedom of speech is a beautiful thing. I can say what I want, but you do not have to pay attention. Belinda Conaway paid attention and it cost her an election. The victory solidifies what Belinda Conaway already notified the Baltimore political world of: Adam Meister covers Baltimore politics like no other writer or publication in this city. Had Belinda Conaway simply ignored me, she would still be City Councilwoman and my blog would be as unknown as it originally was. Belinda Conaway has sent Nick Mosby and I on to bigger and better things. I once again would like to thank her for her lawsuit against me. I also want to remind her and her family that I will continue to write about them and cover their issues that other media sources refuse to cover for some reason.  The Baltimore Brew sums things up nicely here:

“Seven lessons learned from yesterday’s primary
6. For an incumbent, getting booted out is tricky, but not impossible…

… incumbent Belinda K. Conaway, who lost her 7th District seat yesterday to Nick Mosby, and who apparently took one homestead tax credit too many. (Note to others on the council with similar skeletons in their closets: if blogger Adam Meister calls you on it, do not file a $21 million defamation suit against him that you’re going to have to drop.)”

Belinda Conaway has helped usher in a new era of local political coverage and influence. Larry Young has been defending Belinda recently. It was once believed that Young was a king maker of sorts. I am happy to say that the Mosby case shows the growing power of local Internet coverage and that “if blogger Adam Meister calls you on it, do not file a $21 million defamation suit against him that you’re going to have to drop”. The declining political influence of the Larry Youngs and Frank Conaways of the world is great for Baltimore!

Welcome to the new paradigm.

The above photo is of three guys who ran for city council in the 11th district in 2007. Nick Mosby, Adam Meister, and Bill Cole. It will be very interesting to see how two young council-members in neighboring districts work together on trans-district issues. I think we will see some of the positives that single member districts bring about.  Madison Park North has met its match!

I’ll write more about all my observations from yesterday soon enough. I was at the Hampden polling place for over thirteen hours straight! Belinda Conaway had some interesting people handing out literature for her at the polls, or at least they were supposed to be handing out literature. I especially enjoyed the police officers sitting in a running police take-home yellow Ford Mustang for four hours while they were supposed to be supporting the Conaway campaign….

Mosby sign wavers in front of 3210 Liberty Heights

Posted by ameister on Monday, September 12th, 2011

I happened to be jogging by 3210 Liberty Heights Avenue today and I noticed sign wavers for the Nick Mosby campaign standing in front of one of the three houses the Frank/Mary Conaway married couple receives a homestead property tax credit at. Belinda says she lives at the house with daddy bear (odd brother bear also is listed as living there on election documents),  but she still receives a homestead property tax credit at her Randallstown home according to online Baltimore County property tax records. Here is a photo from this morning:

The legal issues of Belinda Conaway’s associates

Posted by ameister on Sunday, September 11th, 2011

Make sure you read and spread the word about my previous post: Belinda Conaway’s homestead property tax credited Randallstown property taxes were paid on July 28, 2011.

We are all familiar with Belinda Conaway’s frivolous multimillion dollar SLAPP lawsuit against me, but many of you may not be familiar with her Father’s “lawsuit strategy“:

“In essence, Belinda Conaway has learned how to gain celebrity by using her position as a pulpit. That’s good politics, if not always effective policy-making. And it’s a family trait. Her father’s penchant for filing lawsuits against the city government–a recent one over city police department affairs, for instance, and an earlier one over agency heads not living in the city–has helped keep his name in the news, and that benefits the whole Conaway family. Getting elected is the Conaways’ business, best reflected in the fact that all four run together on a slate, the Three Bears, which works to keep them all in office (The Count, Aug. 1), though Belinda Conaway has her own campaign committee, too.”

Suing to keep your name in the news is a shameless tactic, but we have seen that it can backfire when they pick on the wrong person! HA HA!

Conaway shame is not just something that came about in this decade, this link to an article from the 1980′s talks about Frank Conaway’s controversial insurance business. How is this guy Clerk of the Court? All voters should be embarrassed.

It looks like disgraced former mayor Sheila Dixon’s campaign account donated $250 to Belinda Conaway’s campaign.

I also did a quick Internet search on Belinda Conaway’s treasurer, Shanai Dunmore . She has some interesting case search entries.

A person named Shanai Dunmore is mentioned is this Baltimore Sun article from 2003:

“The indictment alleges that Stewart and Corey Smith paid an unnamed co-conspirator $10,000 for the contract killing of 21-year-old Terry Cheeks on May 14, 2002, in retaliation for the slaying two days earlier of Albert “Elkie” Dunbar, 22.

The relationship between Stewart and Dunbar was unclear yesterday; however, court records identified Stewart’s mother as Mary Lou Dunbar.

Stewart’s girlfriend, Shanai Dunmore, 25, is accused along with his mother of money laundering violations.”

Welcome to Defeat Belinda Conaway Week!

Posted by ameister on Tuesday, September 6th, 2011

It’s the most wonderful week of the year.  This week we celebrate freedom of political speech by talking all about our favorite frivolous lawsuit filing politician Belinda Conaway!

We will start off slow today. I hope by tomorrow I will have a VERY SPECIAL Belinda Conaway post ready. It should set the tone for the rest of the week leading up to the election on Tuesday the 13th. If you could not tell by now I am endorsing Nick Mosby in the 7th District race. Remember to vote for Mosby on the 13th or we will be stuck with disgraced Councilwoman Conaway (and her embarrassing family) for four more years.

Now some words from a Belinda Conaway supporter.

That link is real! There are many voters who think (and write) EXACTLY like that in West Baltimore.  It is a scary thought and a reality that we need to take very seriously. Many people in the 7th district (probably the overwhelming majority of voters) have not even heard about Belinda Conaway’s Randallstown homestead property tax credit scandal!  Some people think it is just a mean lie. BELINDA CONAWAY is the political bully who tries to silence bloggers with frivolous lawsuits. Her “nice lady” image is BS. Read this email I received from a constituent of hers:

“Hi Adam,
I found this email online… but I am not sure if it is still active.

I wanted to write because I had an incident with Councilwoman Conaway a few months back that I thought you might want to know about.

I contacted her regarding the PUD for the 25th Street Station, which I did not support.  I spoke to her on the phone and urged her to listen to the community members… and so on.  It was a long conversation which ended up in her screaming at me and accusing me of “threatening” her because I told her I did not believe I would be able to support her in the next election.  When I say screaming, I mean SCREAMING.  I was totally shocked and disgusted.  I almost filed a complaint against her -now I wish I had.  I simply called to give her my opinion and if anyone was threatening, it was her”

What a nice lady! She screams, she frivolously sues, she votes for Pete Welch, and she receives the homestead property tax credit in Randallstown!

At least Nick Mosby has the guts to send out this mailer to the voters telling them all about the legendary Belinda Randallstown house.

Who sent the Frank Conaway news conference email?

Posted by ameister on Friday, September 2nd, 2011

The Baltimore Sun and Frank Conaway say the news conference email was a hoax:

“Indeed the emails were sent from a Gmail account, while Conaway had used a Hotmail account for previous campaign correspondences.”

I did some research and according to the 2011 the Baltimore City Primary Candidate List, Frank Conaway’s email address is conawayforbaltimore@gmail.com.  The email address that registered his domain (conawayformayor2011.com) is conawayforbaltimore@hotmail.com.  If you google conawayforbaltimore@gmail.com you will find many places where that email address has been used.  It appears the Gmail address was his official campaign email address in 2010 also. Belinda Conaway’s Facebook page lists her email address as belindaconaway2011@gmail.com.  What is going on here?

Has joke candidate Frank Conaway dropped out of the race for mayor?

Posted by ameister on Thursday, September 1st, 2011

Hassan Giordano says that Frank Conaway Sr. has dropped out of the mayoral race and given his support to Catherine Pugh.

The Daily Record says that Conaway has canceled his press conference.

Who knows what this joke of a politician is thinking. I actually predicted in this article that Conaway would drop out of the race (like he did in 2007) and support Pugh (he supported Mitchell in 2007).  My theory is that he knows he has no chance so he stays in the race until the big debates are over so his last name can get out there as much as possible. The Conaway name recognition helps his disgraced daughter Belinda.  If he really drops out he will support Pugh in order to get Belinda on her ticket. Pugh may get some people who were going to vote for Conaway to vote for her (his name will still be on the ballot so if they were ignorant enough to want to vote for him in the first place they probably will not even know that he dropped out of the race), but there is very little else in it for her. She may be hesitant about making a deal with Conaway and this could be the reason for the delay in the announcement.  Teaming with Belinda Conaway can only hurt Pugh so she should be very careful about any deal with Frank.

In other local political news…

Last night I revived a robo-call from Jody Landers. Today I received my third Stephanie Rawlings-Blake mailing. The theme was education and there was a photo of Elijah Cummings on it.  A Reservoir Hill targeted Nick Mosby  flyer was placed in my door. There is a photo of Bill Cole shaking Mosby’s hand on it. There is also a supportive quote from Bill Cole on it. The quote implies that Cole is endorsing Mosby. I will try to get a digital copy of the flyer to post here.

How can Frank and Mary Conaway have three homestead tax credits? Are they really married? What is the next Conaway embarrassment? When will they all resign?

Posted by ameister on Wednesday, August 31st, 2011

Today the  Baltimore Sun finally got around to covering a small part of the Conaway property tax scandal that had yet to be mentioned in the mainstream media. I covered the Mary Conaway aspect of the story back in March.

The Conaways (Mary and Frank Sr.) should have known that between them they were receiving three homestead property tax credits when they should only have been receiving one!  I brought up the very important marriage aspect of Mary Conaway’s (she is the sitting Register of Wills in Baltimore) role in this mess in the original article that disgraced city councilwoman Belinda Conaway sued me over.  Why does this Mary Conaway signed document (originally posted here in MARCH) say Mary Conaway is an unmarried woman? Why does this Frank and Belinda Conaway signed document say that Frank Conaway Sr. is an unmarried man? When are these games going to stop?

I know the Sun has limited space, but the marriage issues that the above linked to documents reveal could have been explored at some point. Why do the Conaways say they are married in public, but on legal documents they say they are unmarried? They can not be married and unmarried at the same time! Public officials must be held accountable for these types of disgraceful controversies. All of the Conaway’s need to resign and return the property tax money they should have been paying for years upon years!  The good news for disgraced councilwoman Belinda Conaway is that if she says she lives in Randallstown (like signed documents state) then she does not owe any back property taxes, but she also should not be representing a district in a jurisdiction where she does not live. No matter what Belinda Conaway should resign immediately.

Today I was on the C4 show hosted by Marta H. Mossburg.  We talked about the Conaway controversies. I want to thank Marta for having me on the show and for her bringing up why no other elected officials have spoken up against the numerous embarrassing Conaway controversies. Jody Landers is the only mayoral candidate who has talked about the residency issues. It is pretty obvious that more than a few of our leaders are pulling off similar Conaway moves. There are some who do not want to “snitch” on their friends and others who do not want to rock the boat because that could mess up their own personal political ambitions. There is no legitimate excuse for the silence of our leaders. Our leaders remained silent when an elected official frivolously  sued a blogger for millions of dollars because he posted legal documents that showed she received a homestead property tax credit in Randallstown.  They may be elected officials but a true leader would not sit idly by when such an injustice is carried out by a colleague. The City Council and the mayor should be figuring out a way to remove Belinda Conaway from office to properly punish her for her outrageous actions which brought national shame to Baltimore and its city council.

Our leaders will keep trying to play around with their taxes, residences, and all sorts of other things until one is made an example of. These types of actions can no longer go unpunished!

Looks like a Twitter person is getting a kick out of Frank Conaway’s embarasements.   The FakeConaway Twitter account has an interesting photo of the Conaway family that looks like it was  taken at Mary’s Cross Country address (Google map 6810 Cross Country to see the front yard). Since Papa, Sister, and Brother bear all say they live on Liberty Heights I find it interesting that they decided to pose for a photo on Cross Country. That does not seem very convenient for three of the Conaways.

Another odd Mary Conaway document can be found here.

The Four Bears campaign account is getting some serious scrutiny according to this article. All of you will remember that I talked about Frank Conaway’s “Lump Sum” issues in a previous post of mine.

WOLB and the Conaways should be ashamed

Posted by ameister on Friday, August 26th, 2011

Just when you think the Conaways have stooped as low as they can go, they go even lower. First take a look at this Baltimore Sun letter to the editor that calls them out. Do the Conaways think they are some kind of royalty that does not have to follow the same rules we do?

Today I had the extreme displeasure of listening to Frank Conaway’s radio show on WOLB 1010AM. I believe his lackey co-hosts were A. Dwight Pettit, Corrogan Vaughn, and Carlton Douglas of Carlton C. Douglas Funeral Services. Make sure you boycott these three men because of their support of the Conaways. Throughout the show either Conaway, some of his co-hosts, or his callers called for or did not protest calls for the removal of the Police Commissioner and/or State’s Attorney Greg Bernstein from their elected positions. Since this is the USA and we have freedom of speech I have no problem with these individuals expressing their opinions. My opinion is that every single Conaway should resign from public office  immediately.  The radio show gave plenty of good reasons why members of this family should not hold public offices.

The most outrageous occurrence that took place during the show was when a caller wanted to give Mayoral Candidate Frank Conaway some campaign ideas that dealt with green housing. The caller asked if he should leave his number and Frank Conaway said for the caller to call 410 333 3733.  That phone number is the direct phone line of the Clerk of the Circuit Court! Frank Conaway Sr. told a person to call him for political reasons at his work number! How the heck can Conaway rationalize this and why is there no investigation?  Otis Rolley just called the mayor for conducting politics in city hall yet arrogant Frank Conaway takes it a step further by giving out his work phone number to a political operative over the radio. The clerk of the court should not be conducting politics in the Clarence M. Mitchell, Jr. Courthouse! Speaking of the courthouse, does Frank Conaway get paid for his Clerk of the court job while he is on WOLB in the middle of a Friday afternoon promoting various Conaway political campaigns?

It was funny to hear a Stephanie Rawlings-Blake  commercial during the show. It was even funnier to hear Frank Conaway’s frustration with the commercial. Frank can talk the talk, but he sure can’t walk the walk. He would not allow callers to talk about other candidates (he said you have to pay for commercials), but he promoted his own candidacy and Belinda’s candidacy throughout the show.  It was hilarious to hear Belinda Conaway call the show three different times. Two of those times Frank was feeding her easy questions and one time Belinda claimed to read a letter of support from a 7th district community leader. She did not give out the leader’s name of course. The letter sounded a lot like one of Belinda’s campaign speeches when she talks about her accomplishments.

Is Belinda a grown woman or just her father’s puppet? Frank was feeding her talking points when she called. She claims she has lived at her daddy’s house on Liberty Heights during all her years in office although Baltimore County property tax records have said otherwise.  Belinda asked her doubters “Where have you been?”  I think Belinda needs to answer that question!

Frank made classless political accusations about Nick Mosby’s wife without mentioning her name. Mosby is running against Belinda Conway in the 7th district.

The Frank Conaway show opened with his campaign rap.  What a sick joke.

Frank Conaway has received $58,440 in Lump Sum contributions since January

Posted by ameister on Wednesday, August 24th, 2011

This article was originally going to be about joke mayoral candidate Frank Conaway’s large campaign sign posted on the controversial Linden Liquors in Reservoir Hill. I was doing some campaign finance research and I stumbled upon Conaway’s latest report so I decided to expand my original story.  Frank Conaway Sr. was also in the news today because he was caught receiving a homestead property tax credit at two different houses in Baltimore. The Sun should be commended for writing about this, but this should have been investigated back in March when I wrote about the Bareva road house.  Now is a great time to remind all of you of what I discovered and made very public back in March:

“The State of Maryland says that the following people use the following residences as principal residences and that they receive the homestead property tax credit at every location:

Frank Conaway Sr.- 3210 Liberty Heights Avenue Baltimore, MD 21215
Mary Conaway- 6810 Cross Country Blvd Baltimore, MD 21215
Belinda Conaway- 9810 Southall Rd, Randallstown, MD 21133
Frank Conaway- 3931 Bareva Rd Baltimore, MD 21215″

One would think that the Conaways would try to avoid controversy after such revelations. Well They have done a bad job of that. I have found out that the “Friends of (Frank) Conaway” campaign account has received $58,440 in Lump Sum contributions since January.  These anonymous contributions make up 100% of the funds raised by this account since January.

Lump Sum is a controversial campaign finance term that is talked about in this Baltimore Sun article from May 14, 2011. In the article Frank Conaway Sr. is quoted and talked about:

“Conaway, the city’s Circuit Court clerk, reported a lump sum contribution of $13,785 on May 21, 2008. He noted receiving the same amount precisely one year later. Additionally, nearly all of the contributions received by The Four Bears political slate he shares with his wife and two children are marked as lump sums.

When asked about the reports, Conaway said he had no idea what a lump sum is. He said he is an almost entirely self-financed candidate and surmised that the lump sums are actually personal loans he extended to himself. Loans are required to be noted as such in campaign finance reports.

“It’s an error, you can count on that,” Conaway said. He said his campaign would contact the State Board of Elections about correcting the record.”

The Conaways sure like to talk about correcting things yet here we have the mysterious lump sum pop up again!  This is becoming a big joke. The Conaways are filled with lame excuses. Frank said his original lump sum issue was as “error” and that he would contact the Board of Elections. Three months later we have more so-called errors. Did he contact the board of elections?  Can he please tell us where this money is really coming from? The man holds an important elected office and we are supposed to believe that he is this incompetent when it comes to campaign finances?  He can legally pass on some of this money to his daughter’s George Della and Jack Young supported campaign if he wants to.  This “error” needs to be fixed immediately and state elections officials need to take a strong stand on these types of “errors”
