George Della strikes again and Warren Branch benefits

Posted by ameister on Thursday, September 8th, 2011

In a previous article I talked about George Della’s campaign account transferring money to the campaign accounts of a few 2011 candidates. It appears that Della’s account has recently given money to one of the worst candidates on the 2011 ballot. Jack Young’s campaign did not even give money to Warren Branch, but Della’s account did:

Candidates Account Contributor Name(Address) Amount Date Received Contribution Type
Branch, Warren Maurice Citizens For Friends of Senator George W. Della, JR
(405 E. Hamburg St. ,
Baltimore, MD, 21230)
$1,000.00 08/16/2011 Political Clubs
Remarks: contribution
Conaway, Belinda K. Friends Of Friends of Senator George W. Della, Jr.
(405 E. Hamburg Street ,
Baltimore, MD, 21230)
$1,000.00 07/19/2011 Candidate accounts

The Maryland Election Center site says that Della’s account is still active.  How can an account be active and not file the most recent two 2011 campaign reports? The Della account transfers that I have listed in my articles were found on the beneficiaries’ reports. Della’s account does not list these transactions anywhere since no Della campaign finance reports were filed at the two most recent deadlines according to the Maryland Election Center site.

George Della financially influences the 2011 election

Della may be gone, but his campaign account is still helping current candidates. Draw your own conclusions:

Candidates Account Contributor Name(Address) Amount Date Received Contribution Type
Conaway, Belinda K. Friends Of Friends of Senator George W. Della, Jr.
(405 E. Hamburg Street ,
Baltimore, MD, 21230)
$1,000.00 07/19/2011 Candidate accounts
Kraft, Jim Friends Of Friends of Senator George W. Della, Jr.
(405 E. Hamburg St. ,
Baltimore, MD, 21230)
$6,000.00 07/26/2011 Candidate accounts
Pugh, Catherine E. Committee to Elect FRIENDS OF SENATOR GEORGE W. DELLA, JR
(405 E HAMBURG STREET ,
BALTIMORE, MD, 21230)
$1,000.00 06/29/2011 Candidate accounts
  • The $6,000 contribution to Kraft’s campaign is equal to almost half the combined total raised by Kraft’s Democratic competitors.
  • The $1,000 contribution to Conaway’s campaign represents over 10% of the money Friends Of Belinda K. Conaway has raised this year.

Belinda Conaway’s numerous campaign finance issues- Jack Young and George Della contribute to Belinda

Posted by ameister on Friday, August 19th, 2011

Updated campaign finance reports are now live on the Maryland Elections Center site. Disgraced Councilwoman Belinda Conaway‘s reports are filled with controversial tidbits.

Belinda Conway is associated with two accounts according to the Maryland Elections Center site: “The Four Bears Slate” and Friends Of Belinda K. Conaway (which currently lists no campaign treasurer).  “The Four Bears Slate” not only supports Belinda, but it also supports her brother, father, step-mother, and some other people, some of whom just happen to live in Frank Conaway owned houses (or at least those addresses are given). Treasurer Angel Maes lives at  3620 Wabash Avenue which she purchased from Frank Conaway in 2006. The account currently has a balance of -$9,082.63 (yes, that is a negative number) after raising $5,357.47 since the first report of the year. I will get back to this account later.

Friends Of Belinda K. Conaway currently has a balance of $8,851.12 after raising $9,400.00 since the first report of the year.  Of that $9,400, $1,000 came from Friends of Senator George W. Della, Jr. and $3,000 came from Friends of Bernard “Jack” Young.  Nick Mosby has raised $5365.33 according to the Maryland Elections Center site.

The Della and Young contributions bring up a lot of questions. The first thing that comes to mind is that Della, Young, and Belinda have all been embroiled in residency controversies in the recent past. Della’s campaign account only gave money to two other candidates- Jim Kraft and Catherine Pugh. Is Della trying to tell us something?

Since the humiliating end of the Conaway lawsuit fiasco many of you have asked me what is going to happen to Belinda now that she says she lives with her daddy on Liberty Heights, but numerous signed legal documents say her primary residence is in Randallstown. Some of you have asked me if the City Council will look into this matter.  Well, Jack Young is the President of the City Council and if he wanted to look into Belinda’s residency issue, he could easily set something up, but with this $3000 donation you can see he has little interest in figuring out what is up with Belinda’s residency.

The City Council President and the city of Baltimore should be ashamed! Some of you may remember my post about Artscape. On July 17, 2011 Jack Young came up to my and I immediately confronted him about Belinda Conaway’s frivolous lawsuit against me. I left this aspect of our conversation out of my original post because I had been advised not to bring up the lawsuit to public officials because it could lead to Conaway delaying the hearing. I took a foolish risk in confronting Jack Young on this subject matter, but now I can admit that I did. I asked him why he was not doing anything to one of his council members who was frivolously suing me.  He told me to calm down (I was yelling at him) and that I had nothing to worry about since I had a pro bono lawyer. He said Conaway was doing the same thing Jessamy did when she brought up the police commissioner’s  Bernstein signs in his front yard.  He said Jessamy and Belinda made mistakes by calling attention to these matters.  According to Friends Of Belinda K. Conaway two days after this discussion Friends of Bernard “Jack” Young gave Friends Of Belinda K. Conaway $3,000.  Do not vote for Jack Young unless he does the right thing and investigates his $3000 friend.

Now back to “The Four Bears Slate”. $309.22 of the slate’s contributions came from anonymous sources. You are not allowed to mark campaign finance entries as anonymous. $5,000 came from “Lump Sum”. Lump Sum is a controversial campaign finance term that is talked about in this Baltimore Sun article from May 14, 2011. In the article Frank Conaway Sr. is quoted and talked about:

“Conaway, the city’s Circuit Court clerk, reported a lump sum contribution of $13,785 on May 21, 2008. He noted receiving the same amount precisely one year later. Additionally, nearly all of the contributions received by The Four Bears political slate he shares with his wife and two children are marked as lump sums.

When asked about the reports, Conaway said he had no idea what a lump sum is. He said he is an almost entirely self-financed candidate and surmised that the lump sums are actually personal loans he extended to himself. Loans are required to be noted as such in campaign finance reports.

“It’s an error, you can count on that,” Conaway said. He said his campaign would contact the State Board of Elections about correcting the record.”

The Conaways sure like to talk about correcting things yet here we have the mysterious lump sum pop up again!  Why do we keep electing these people?

If you were naive enough to donate to Jack Young’s campaign, you can now see that a little bit of your money has  gone to fund Belinda “Homestead Property Tax Credit in Randallstown” Conaway.

WE DEMAND REAL ANSWERS FROM THE CONAWAYS!

Della’s defeat proves that incumbents are not invincible

Posted by ameister on Thursday, September 16th, 2010

Tuesday’s election results in the 46th district were shocking. Bill Ferguson trounced incumbent George Della. I thought Ferguson had a slim chance. I never could have predicted this trouncing. The Bill Cole endorsement foreshadowed what was about to happen.

Della was the establishment. He was the kind of incumbent that often runs unopposed. It is still sort of surreal that a newcomer came out of nowhere and trounced him. Ferguson worked hard and quickly gained very powerful friends once they saw that Della was in fact a paper tiger and could easily be beaten. I wish I cold have been there the moment when Della realized that the no-name running against him was no longer a no-name and was in fact a serious threat. I wonder which one of his houses he was at when he first realized that this election was going to be a lot different than his usual ones?

Incumbents use their name recognition to help build a reliable voting base that will blindly vote for them year after year. The same familiarity that breads mindless followers can also be used against an incumbent by a creative opponent who has the ability to tap into voter frustrations. If you can convince voters that familiarity is caused by boredom and lack of progress and that change is the only thing that can fix this problem then you will have taken a big first step toward unseating the incumbent.

Bill Ferguson used his teaching connections to set up a powerful and effective street team. I assume that his team’s presence on the streets of Baltimore gained the attention of some behind the scenes players. He used one of the establishment’s fundraisers and was able to generate a lot of money for his campaign. He put the money to good use with some of the best “attack” mailing I have ever seen. He was not afraid to point out Della’s typical politician qualities that so many people are tired of.  Ferguson’s mailings implied that a vote forFerguson was a vote against the tired old Baltimore political way.

Victorious campaigns are still about generating money unfortunately . I am not going to sit here and tell you this was a total insurgent rebellion against the establishment, but incumbents need to worry about scenarios like this one. A no-name can use a combination of a powerful street team, a desire for change amongst many voters, and powerful allies who greatly dislike the incumbent to successfully trounce the George Dellas of Baltimore. I never thought Rikki Spector could be defeated in the 5th city council district until today. Ferguson has created a blueprint for getting rid of her. A young energetic Jewish candidate needs to pop up on the 5th district scene in 2011 with a lot of young supporters who will knock on many doors. Once the supporters get the attention of numerous people then the candidate should make friends with powerful benefactors who greatly dislike Spector. They probably will find the candidate if he or she is doing things the right way.  Once the money and the street team are taken care of then the anti-Spector allies will start to awaken and come out from all over the place. Keep the momentum and the hardcore revealing mailings going and you will be able to win.

Some are going to say that these scenarios are sell-out scenarios. In theory a person might have to compromise beliefs in order to raise large sums of money and gain powerful benefactors.  I know Bill Ferguson and I feel like he is not going to compromise his beliefs now that he has gained power. He did what he had to do in order to win. I would not touch the establishment if I ran for office again, but in all likelihood I would have zero chance to win if I did that (like when I ran in 2007). 100% idealism does not work in Baltimore.

Some are going to say that Ferguson is now part of a political machine. Patrick Turner, Bill Cole, and Stephanie Rawlings-Blake were all at his victory party. There were many people there with O’Malley green on them. It is pretty obvious who Ferguson will endorse in the 10th district, for mayor, and for city council president in 2011 now that he has won. Will he be a cog in O’Malley’s machine? Will he blindly follow O’Malley? I do not think he will do these things. If he becomes a mindless cog then I guess you can call him a sell out. I don’t believe he will sell out, then again I am the idealistic guy who came in 5th place in 2007 so I could be totally wrong about all this.

The Ferguson endorsement by Ed Reisinger may have saved Reisinger from suffering a Della type defeat in 2011. I assume remnants or the Ferguson street team will be resurrected in 2011 to help Reisinger take on Terry Hickey and whoever else appears on the 10th district scene. It would not shock me if mayor Rawlings-Blake allows the 10th district to be redrawn to help Reisinger. Remember that districts are about to be redrawn since this was a census year.

I think Bill Cole made a great strategic move. He showed that his name has clout beyond the 11th district and he allied himself with what will be seen as a young energetic winner. I believe that at the very least Bill Ferguson had behind the scenes help from team O’Malley associates (again I need to point out that the MAYOR OF BALTIMORE was at his victory party).  If “behind the scenes help from team O’Malley associates” helped get rid of a Baltimore establishment just imagine what straight up out in the open serious support directly from the O’Malley Machine will be able to do for Bill Cole if he runs for City Council President in 2011? O’Malley’s associates and allies are very powerful and well organized in Baltimore. I believe this more than I ever have before in my life. Stephanie Rawlings-Blake will win in 2011 and Bill Cole will be on her ticket and will become the next City Council President of Baltimore. I have seen all that I need to see to convince me of this.

Endorsements and observations

Posted by ameister on Tuesday, September 14th, 2010

I really wanted to write more today, but real life responsibilities got in the way. I have been incredibly busy for the last week. Maybe one day I will be  a full-time online newspaper publisher and I will be able to make election coverage a higher priority in my life.

I think it’s pretty obvious who I support. I like Bernstein, Ferguson, Hector Torres, and anyone running against a Conaway. I encourage you to vote for any candidate running against an incumbent who has endorsed Jessamy.  If I had more time I would have written about Josh Dowlut, Art Buist, and Melissa Techentin.  All three of those people are outsider candidates who have reached out and contacted me numerous times. Good luck to all of them.

I voted at 1:45 PM and then ran through the 40th, 44th, and 46th districts. There were no people handing out materials in the 40th. In the 44th I ran by a polling place on Eutaw where there were numerous people handing out candidate promotions. Keiffer Mitchell and John Anderson were well represented. I ran to Westport and visited two polling places. At the firehouse there was only one guys handing out Bil Ferguson materials. One one hand out Ferguson is on a ticket with Governor O’Malley. On another handout he is part of the “46th District Democratic team” along with Jason Filippou and Bill Romani. At the nearby school in Westport there were Della and Ferguson people who all seemed to be half asleep. Della’s ticket included Peter Hammen, but so did the O’Malley/Brown endorsed ticket which also included Ferguson. I guess Peter Hammen is a likable guy or a shrewd politician. Baltimore fire and police support Della, at least that is what a piece of paper I was handed said.I think an off duty firefighter handed me that one. Ferguson had more flyers than Della and his materials were all fancier (more expensive).  I ran by a polling place in pigtown also. The Pigtown Polling place had the most activity in front of it. I actually saw a Bernstein sign there and centralcommittee candidate Bill Marker was handing out promotions. Marker is on the Ferguson ticket.  At 3:57 PM I received a Gregg Bernstein robocall.

George Della is desperate

Posted by ameister on Sunday, September 12th, 2010

After years of dictator-like machine politics and political intimidation George Della is starting to worry that his family’s multi-decade reign over south Baltimore is about to end. For years he dished it out, but now he cannot take it, and he is portraying himself as a nice, innocent, good old boy common man with no Internet understanding. What a joke. This guy is a political bully who is squirming like a pig now that he has a real challenger. What a pathetic individual. He represents everything that is wrong with Baltimore machine politics, and if he is defeated (and that is still a long shot), it should bring fear into all of his fellow corrupt incumbents’ hearts. Let us hope that Della is sent back to his house in Baltimore County and that this is the start of a peaceful political rebellion in Baltimore.

Here is a PDF copy of a letter that Della sent out to constituents in south Baltimore. It wreaks of pathetic desperation.

George Della enthusiastically endorses Jessamy

Posted by ameister on Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

George Della “enthusiastically” endorsed Patricia Jessamy in the print version of the Afro. You can see what he and other State Senators wrote here.

“We applaud Mrs. Jessamy for her responsive and creative leadership!”

Della was the State Senator in the 46th district in 2007 when one of his constituents named Zach Sowers was randomly curb stomped to death. He was the State Senator in the 46th district in 2008 when Jessamy’s spokeswoman Margaret Burns went unpunished for minimizing the murder of Sowers.  First District City Councilman Jim Kraft called for Burns to be fired. Burns still works for Jessamy and is paid with taxpayer dollars. Three of the “men” who were involved in the murder will be out of jail in 2016 before they turn 30. The “man” who did the stomping could be out of jail by 2032 when he will still be in his early 40′s. Sowers died before he turned 30.

Investigative Voice recently talked about George Della attending a Jessamy/Bernstein debate:

“Della told I.V. he believes the state’s attorney’s race will be decided “based on what happens” regarding violent crime in the city in the weeks leading up to the election.

“Violent crime cuts across all races,” the veteran senator observed. “People are searching for answers; they want no more excuses.”

Della declined to endorse any of the three candidates, but cited the recent homicide of a Johns Hopkins research assistant in Charles Village who was killed by an alleged assailant that Jessamy’s office had failed to keep off the streets.”

Whatever you say George… Jessamy is one big excuse and you just enthusiastically endorsed her.

This endorsement is the ultimate in vote pandering and classic Baltimore political incumbent alliance forming of which so many of us are sick and tired! Della shows that he is a heartless trolling politician who deserves to be sent straight to his COUNTY HOME on September 14th. Vote for city resident Bill Ferguson in the 46th district State Senate election on September 14th.

George Della faces a real challenge in the 46th district

Posted by ameister on Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

It looks like the 46th district machine is about to receive a challenge from a youthful insurgent. I have been informed that Bill Ferguson (who actually lives in the city unlike someone…) will run against George Della in the 46th District State Senate Democratic primary. Ferguson is a former Baltimore City teacher who most of you probably have never heard of, but look at this photo from this past weekend (click on the photo for a larger version):

The guy clearly has a team of supporters who are willing to work for him. That is a great first step and definitely a show of force. You can check out Bill Ferguson’s campaign site here. His people put together this very professional looking campaign video:

It is encouraging to see an outsider making a serious attempt to take down the establishment candidate. This could get interesting.

Questionable George Della banner flown over Preakness

Posted by ameister on Thursday, May 20th, 2010

I received the following email the other day:

“Adam – Have you heard about the airplane banner flown over Preakness that advertised for George Della? No authority line attributed to the expenditure. Thus, one of several outcomes (all bad): (1) illegal expenditure from the campaign as it wasn’t attributed to the campaign, (2) illegal expenditure from an independent source that did not coordinate with the campaign – third party should be prosecuted, or (3) it was a coordinated expenditure between campaign and third party in violation of independent expenditure rules. No matter the outcome, it’s a serious offense. Anonymous political advertisements are illegal in Maryland. This is the heart of dirty politics.”

Luke Clippinger joins George Della’s 46th district ticket

Posted by ameister on Thursday, May 6th, 2010

On Wednesday afternoon I was told that 46th district house of delegates candidate Luke Clippinger joined George Della’s ticket. Della, Peter Hammen, and Brian McHale make up the rest of the ticket. Carolyn Krysiak is retiring.

It appears that Clippinger’s hard work caught the eye of Della. One of the appeals of Clippinger was that he was a new face with new ideas. Now that he is joining the establishment ticket I wonder if he will be seen in a different light.
